- Wild
I believed Sarcosuchus was the largest crocodilian on the Island, until I encountered Deinosuchus. Massive and bulky, this specimen seems to actually be a mix of its' namesake, and a similar species known as Purussaurus. Deinosuchus sport huge and powerful jaws, which they utilize to break the bones of their prey, and halt their escape. Attempting to escape while suffering the effects of their bite can lead to your demise. This coupled with their incredibly tough hide can make disposing of Deinosuchus a difficult and dangerous task.
- Domesticated
When tamed, Deinosuchus can make quick work of many creatures, both land and water. Most creatures seem to lack the intelligence to halt their movement when suffering the destructive effects of a Deinosuchus bite, and this ultimately costs them their life. Any tribe in control of a Deinosuchus packs a dangerous punch...or in this case...bite!
Appearance
The Deinosuchus is a large crocodilian with a resemblance to the Sarco. However, the Deinosuchus is bulkier and its jaws are more broad.
Color Scheme and Regions
Behavior
The Deinosuchus generally tends to swim around swamps, rivers, and oceans, waiting for prey to get within striking range.

Wild Stats Level-up
Type in values of a wild creature to see on which stats it's emphasized. Green values on a high-level creature are very good for breeding. If you have already tamed your creature you can try to recover the breeding stats with an external tool.[1]
The stat-calculator does not work in the mobile-view, see here for alternatives: Apps
Note that after the creature is tamed it gets bonuses on some stats depending on the taming effectiveness. This makes it hard to retrieve the levels on a tamed creature, so this tool is only for wild ones, but gives a first impression, how well the stats are distributed.

Floating Surface
The Deinosuchus has two different modes while swimming:
Surface Swimming: The Deinosuchus will swim similar to a
Raft, only swimming on the water surface without diving. To deactivate this mode swim down using the crouch button (C,
,

).
Free Swimming: The Deinosuchus will swim normally as a native aquatic creature. To deactivate this mode swim up until reach the water surface.
Piranha Scarer
The Deinosuchus scares Piranhas when it is swimming.
Damage Reduction
The Deinosuchus reduces all kind of damage by 50% that it receives on its head.
Also the Deinosuchus' body reduces the incoming damage depending on the type of damage that it is receiving, and all those multipliers are stackable with the head multiplier:

Combat
This section describes how to fight against the Deinosuchus.
General
Deinosuchus has a low detection range around it, so its relatively easy to avoid direct conflict with it, however once the player got its attention there are some thing to consider if the player wants to kill it.
Strategy
Deinosuchus are more vulnerable on land than in water, so luring one to shore will allow for it to be defeated more easily. If it receives damage on its head it receive 50% reduction for all kind of damage, so its recomended to focus on attack the rest of the body.
Weaponry
Most of the ranged weapons that use arrows such as Bow,
Crossbow or
Compound Bow are not recommended because of the massive damage reduction that the Deinosuchus have against this type of prejectiles, going melee on foot is not viable either because of the same reason. If the player goes on foot the best strategy to take it down are specific firearms such as both types of
Shotguns,
Longneck Rifle or
Fabricated Sniper Rifle because those weapon's damage are not reduced by the Deinosuchus' skin. (See Passives for more details)
Dangers
Although the Deinosuchus may seem cumbersome on land, it excels in speed once it enters the water. This speed allows a Deinosuchus to make quick work of smaller creatures.
It's Giga Bite attack can dish out 425 damage, comparable to a wild Giganotosaurus, by default, which is enough to one-shot a level 1
Carnotaurus at base stats. Of course, if this isn't enough on its own to finish off the target, the attack also inflicts the
Fractured status effect that does percent damage on a moving target, meaning that the dino is effectively demobilized and subject to the whims of the Deinosuchus. Coupled with its broad area of effect, a fully charged Giga Bite can wipe out swathes of player-tamed dinos, even at low level, and doubly so for high level Deinosuchuses, and even damage soakers like the
Paraceratherium can be shredded asunder by the inflicted status effect.
Therefore, when tackling a Deinosuchus in the wild, the player should minimize the number of dinos they sic on it and try to maneuver next to its tail while attacking on a fast moving mount like a Raptor or an
Argentavis. Of course, should they wisely try to maintain a wide berth between themselves and the alligatoroid, they may utilize a firearm such as the
Pump-Action Shotgun since its armor partially negates damage inflicted by
Stone Arrow and
Metal Arrow.
Avoid attacking the head, as all incoming damage is reduced by 50%.
Weakness
Since Deinosuchus are much slower on land, a ranged weapon can be useful to take one down.

Utility
Roles
- Combatant: The Deinosuchus has excelent base stats that allows it to be a good battle mount.
- Damage Dealer: The Deinosuchus' Giga Bite does massive amount of damage per bite, allowing it to kill big creatures easily such as
Rexes,
Brontosaurus or even other Deinosuchus. (Level up Health and Damage)
- Titan Killer: Its Giga Bite inflicts
Bleeding to the target, allowing the easy kill of massive dangers such as the
Titanosaur. (Level up Health and Damage)
- Giga/Carcha Killer: A high level breeded Deinosuchus can easily kill
Giganotosaurus and
Carcharodontosaurus. It is an excellent tool to hunt this apex predators and obtain
Giganotosaurus Heart, or just to restart that importat spawn on the map. (Level up Health and Damage)
- Boss Killer: Due to it's moderate drag weight and powerful bite. It is possible to bring a Deinosuchus into a boss arena and they can be used as a rather powerful mount. What lack in speed, they more then make up for in power. Plus, with the fractured debuff, you will be able to literally bleed down your enemies' health. (Level up Health and Damage)
- PvP: Due to the fact that its Giga Bite applies
Bleeding to the target, it can be used as a anti-soaker, specially underwater where it has better mobility. (Level up Health and Damage)
- Damage Dealer: The Deinosuchus' Giga Bite does massive amount of damage per bite, allowing it to kill big creatures easily such as
- Tank: The Deinosuchus has a 50% damage reduction of any kind on its head, in addition to that all its body reduces the damage of many types of projectiles (See Abilities), both damage reductions in combination with its excellent base
Health allows the Deinosuchus to tank many kinds of damage decently, including turrets. (Level up Health)
- Ocean Explorer: The Deinosuchus is a very strong mount with good swimming speed, which means that this creature can deal with big dangers under the ocean such as
Mosasaurus,
Plesiosaurus or even
Tusoteuthis. (Level up Health and Damage)
- Explorer/Transport: The quick speed that the Deinosuchus has swimming and its good
Weight stat allows its use for exploring or transporting heavy objects between two points. (Level up Stamina and Weight)
- Tek Cave Fighter: Although the Deinosuchus is low on the ground, its high base stats and strong arsenal makes it a good option to defeat the Tek Cave with an army of them. (Level up Health and Damage)

Notes
For information pertaining specifically to the real-world Deinosuchus, see the relevant Wikipedia article.
- Deinosuchus sanguineus roughly translates to "bloodthirsty terrible crocodile."
- The Deinosuchus has a skull that likely indicates a closer relation to alligators than crocodiles. The first detail that does so is its more U-shaped snout, as opposed to the crocodile's V-shaped snout. The second such detail is that when its mouth is closed, there are almost no lower teeth visible (although alligators do not have ANY lower teeth visible like this), instead of the crocodile's interlocking teeth.
- Deinosuchus is a genus that lived on the western and eastern shorelines of the Western Interior Seaway, an inland sea that divided Cretaceous North America into Laramidia to the west and Appalachia to the east, from about 82 to 73 million years ago, where, at various points in its history it would've interacted with many taxa, such as
Xiphactinus,
Hesperornis and
Archelon in the sea, and maybe even
Parasaur on land. They were some of the largest crocodylomorphs to ever exist, with Deinosuchus riograndensis estimated to grow up to 12 meters, or 41 feet, long, comparable to a large T. rex.
- Sarcosuchus imperator measures up to 10 meters long, not much shorter than Deinosuchus riograndensis and overlapping strongly in size with smaller Deinosuchus species, yet the in-game
Sarcosuchus is dwarfed by the Deinosuchus two times over.

- Deinosuchus shares spawns with its lesser, distant cousin
Sarcosuchus on The Island and elsewhere.
- Its dossier makes reference to the giant extinct caiman Purussaurus, which inhabited an ancient, long-dried up sea in the western Amazon between 5.3 and 16 million years ago.
- Deinosuchus are surprisingly common for a creature of their weight class. Its not uncommon at all to see a grouping of two or even three in close proximity to one another, and more than a dozen in a small section of The Writhing Swamps on The Island.
- Most normally hostile creatures do not aggro on tamed Deinosuchus, with the exceptions of
Piranha and wild Deinosuchus.
