The Crossbow is one of the Weapons in ARK: Survival Evolved. It is unlocked at Level 25 for 12 Engram Points.

Like its predecessor, the  Bow, the Crossbow is a highly effective tool for both taming and combat, able to fire  Stone,  Flame, and  Tranq Arrows. However, the Crossbow deals much higher damage per shot, making it more effective at dealing with stronger enemies, though this comes at the cost of having a significantly longer reload time.

The Crossbow is also capable of firing  Grappling Hooks and  Zip-Line Anchors, making it a great mobility tool.

Unlike the Bow, the Crossbow can be fired underwater, making it an ideal choice for hunting or taming aquatic creatures.

The Crossbow has 100 Durability, costing 1 durability per use, for a total of 100 uses.

The Crossbow is superseded by the  Compound Bow.

Notes

  • To load the Crossbow, just drag & drop arrows on the Crossbow in the Inventory.
  • Many creatures will take increased damage if you shoot them in the head. Torpor gain from Tranq Arrows scales with this boost.
  • Unlike the Bow, shots fired from the Crossbow will always be fully charged.
  • The Crossbow isn't as efficient as a  Longneck Rifle with  Tranquilizer Darts for increasing a creature's Torpor, at least in terms of Torpor per Damage (TPD), but deals higher Torpor per Second (TPS) if successfully firing at its maximum firing rate.
  • Although the Crossbow deals high damage per shot, its slow attack speed results in a low DPS (see infobox) against unarmored targets for Stone Arrows. This is half as much as a  Pike provides.
  • Like the Bow, arrows fired from the Crossbow can be recovered by walking over the area of impact. However, they will be recovered as Stone Arrows, regardless of which type of arrow was fired. The arrows will sometimes break on impact or despawn before you can get to them, so they are not always recoverable.
  • The Crossbow is a highly resource-efficient weapon due to using cheap, field-craftable Stone Arrows as ammunition. Combined with the utility factor of being able to fire underwater, consider keeping a crossbow in your hotbar to use on slower and/or weaker opponents (and in case you unexpectedly find yourself fighting aquatic enemies) and saving a more effective but costlier firearm or other higher-tier weapon for tougher opponents.
  • Due to the Crossbow being so efficient, it is reasonable to assume that even higher tier players will carry one.
