The Improvised Explosive Device is one of the explosives in ARK: Survival Evolved. Unlike the thrown  Grenade, it can be placed in pairs to create traps.

The IED can be triggered by anyone crossing the tripwire, including the creator and tribe members. The creator and tribe members can however unwire a paired device from the radial options menu. Unwired devices can be picked up and replaced.

List of explosive damage versus various materials as of Patch 257:

Weapon/Structure Thatch Wood Stone Metal Tek
 C4 Charge * 11813 * 3544 788
 Grenade 788 788 1838 237 53
 Improvised Explosive Device (pair) * 7875 ** ** **
 Rocket Propelled Grenade * 7350 * 2205 596
 Tek Rifle 1260 536 294 29 185
 Tek Grenade 2625 1115 612 59 385
 Cannon * * 3446 355 40

* The damage is greater than the health-points of structures of that material
** IEDs are currently just about impossible to place on stone, metal, or Tek structures.

  • The IED can be triggered by tribemates. Be careful.
  • The Improvised Explosive Device is known as C4 Tripwire and Trip Wire C4 in the game files.
  • IED's are best used as traps for luring players and/or hostile dinosaurs into.
  • The best placements for IED's are around the outside of enemy bases, specifically the doors, and in dense forested areas where they cannot be easily spotted.

Patch  ARK: Survival Evolved Changes
201.2 IED's don't use demolition explosion type anymore, as they were not intended to. (effectively cuts their damage against structures by about 60%). They are anti-personnel/defensive.
