The Spear is one of the Weapons in ARK: Survival Evolved. It is unlocked at Level 2 for 3 Engram Points.
The Spear can be used in melee using the Fire button (Lmb, ,
,
), or it can be thrown by holding and releasing the Alt Fire button (Rmb,
,
,
). Thrown Spears have the chance to deal much higher damage than a Spear used in melee, especially if the thrower manages to land a headshot.
Unlike most other weapons, the Spear has no Durability, meaning it can be used a theoretically infinite number of times. However, the main drawback to this is that the Spear has a 3.5% chance to break instantly when used, which can be very dangerous should it break mid-combat. As such, it is highly recommended to keep multiple Spears in one's inventory until a better weapon can be obtained.
The Spear is superseded by the Pike.
Notes
- The Spear is the first melee weapon players can unlock.
- Survivors can use Spears to harvest corpses. It functions in a way similar to a Pick, as it yields more
Raw Meat than
Hide when used in this manner. However, it is not advised to harvest materials with the Spear, as Picks and Hatchets are more effective and can't randomly break.
- The Spear is critical item in the early game as it is the strongest melee weapon available until the Pike at Level 25, and the strongest ranged weapon until the
Bow at Level 10.
- The Spear is extremely effective at fishing since it will almost always kill a
Coelacanth with a single hit, with the wielder automatically beginning to drag the body.
- When thrown, the Spear will still exist in the target for a select period of time. This could theoretically be used to mark target creatures for taming or other purposes, as they will be the only entity with the weapon sticking out of their body.
- However, using a Spear (or any non-torpor inducing weapon) on a creature you intend to tame is generally inadvisable for several reasons:
- Very few creatures will not either flee or fight back when hit.
- Unconscious creatures, while not able to react to the Spear, will lose taming effectiveness when hit.
- Reducing the health of your intended tame will leave it with less health to survive attacks from hostile creatures and/or Survivors in the worst-case scenario.
- Due to these reasons and more, it's generally better to memorise the creature's level, colours and surroundings. Higher level players could even use a
Transponder Tracker and
Transponder Node to retain knowledge of the creature's location from anywhere on the map.
- Alternatively
Glow Sticks can be used being more visible, dealing no damage, and longer lasting. unfortunately these have shorter range and there may be difficulty trying to hit skittish creatures.
- However, using a Spear (or any non-torpor inducing weapon) on a creature you intend to tame is generally inadvisable for several reasons:
- If successfully thrown at another player, the Spear's rather large model can obstruct the victim's vision, making movement and aiming more difficult.
- Thrown Spears have a 5% chance to break on impact, but can otherwise be re-collected from where they landed (unless it hit a living and conscious creature or player).
- Be aware that thrown Spears will naturally decay after a certain amount of time if not picked up.
- If the Spear is placed on the action bar, the player can easily craft new ones on-the-go whenever they run out (provided they have the materials). Placing the Spear's Engram on the action bar as well will allow crafting of new spears even before running out.
