The Glowtail is one of the creatures in the Aberration-DLC of ARK: Survival Evolved.

Basic Info

Dossier

This section is intended to be an exact copy of what the survivor Helena Walker, the author of the dossiers, has written. There may be some discrepancies between this text and the in-game creature.

Wild

With a body reminiscent of a gecko, fluttery wings and a natural stockpile of charge light, Microluminis psykhe has an unearthly, if oddly charming appearance. A curious creature by nature, it always gave me the impression that it was studying me as much as I was studying it. A favorite snack of many predators, this small lizard has no natural poisons, or any means of defending itself at all save for a swift retreat and its charge light. Survivors can approach it without fear.

Domesticated

As a pet, Microluminis psykhe is happy to clamber up a survivor's shoulder and cling to it as though it never wants to leave. Evenly tempered and easy to care for after being tamed, it is a stalwart companion and an excellent source of charge light.

Behavior

Though Helena called it a favorite snack for predators, the Glowtail is often left alone for unknown reasons in the artifact caves it inhabits. They are usually seen clinging to rock walls and can be nimble when needed. Webbed feet and the patagia located on their side help to free fall with some control.

Appearance

The Glowtail is a tiny gecko-like reptile with a glowing tip at the end of its long tail. Large eyes and a long tongue help it catch small prey. It also has large webbed feet that seem to act as suction and electric discharge pads for climbing and side patagia for gliding.

Color Scheme and Regions

This section displays the Glowtail's natural colors and regions. For demonstration, the regions below are colored red over an albino Glowtail. The colored squares shown underneath each region's description are the colors that the Glowtail will randomly spawn with to provide an overall range of its natural color scheme. Hover your cursor over a color to display its name and ID.

This information can be used to alter the Glowtail's regions by entering cheat SetTargetDinoColor <ColorRegion> <ColorID> in the cheat console. For instance, cheat SetTargetDinoColor 0 6 would color the Glowtail's "main body" magenta.

Wild Stats Level-up

Type in values of a wild creature to see on which stats it's emphasized. Green values on a high-level creature are very good for breeding. If you have already tamed your creature you can try to recover the breeding stats with an external tool.[1]

Glowtail

The stat-calculator does not work in the mobile-view, see here for alternatives: Apps

Note that after the creature is tamed it gets bonuses on some stats depending on the taming effectiveness. This makes it hard to retrieve the levels on a tamed creature, so this tool is only for wild ones, but gives a first impression, how well the stats are distributed.

Abilities

Active

Bite
  • The Glowtail bites the target for 12 damage.
  • Can be used every 0.67s by both a rider and the AI.

Passive

Light Pet

The Light Pets are a subcategory of shoulder pets that prduces its own bioluminescence. To activate its light use the wheel menu or use the  Clap Emote on the emotes wheel menu.

When activated the light applies  Charged Light effect on all the players and creatures nearby, reducing the hordes of  Nameless and  Reapers that appear, along with disable their natural armor, however this also attracts  Seekers and increases their  Melee Damage and damage resistance.

The stats of the light pets receive some changes on their uses, in addition to its conventional use, the stats of  Stamina,  Oxygen and  Melee Damage changes their names to  Charge Capacity,  Charge Regeneration and  Charge Emission Range respectively and they scales that specific value of the light.

Combat

This section describes how to fight against this creature.

General

The glowtail is passive and will run away if you hit it.

Strategy

All strategies will work with a Glowtail. Its only defense is to run away. Be careful of carnivores in the area!

Weaponry

Any weapon (including bare hands) will work just fine against this small fry.

Dangers

Any hostile creature in the area, as the Glowtail poses no threat.

Weakness

As running away and not getting spotted is its only protection, it is fairly easy to kill.

Taming

For general info about domesticating a wild creature see Taming.

KO Strategy

There is no KO Strategy for this tame as it is a passive tame. Simply put its taming food in the right-most slot, and hand feed it. It tames well with  Ascerbic Mushroom, but loves  Plant Species Z Seed the most. If your glowtail is in water, you can not feed it. Try hitting it out of the water if that is the case.

Utility

As a Charge Light creature, Glowtail carries charge, which replenishes over time while its light is turned off. When the light is turned on, it provides survivors with the Charged Light buff, protecting from  Nameless and  Reaper ambush, but attracting  Seekers. If set to active, it can also detect both nearby enemy players, and nearby creatures of maximum level.

Due to the nature of its passive state, Glowtail cannot fight back, and should never be used as combat dino.

It provides the fastest charge recharge rate, but has a very low charge capacity.

Roles

Anti-Nameless/Reaper Ambush: Since the Glowtail can be shoulder mounted like every other Charge Light, it provides a charge to prevent Nameless pack from emerging and will weaken Reapers. This however, will attract  Seeker. To quickly toggle the shoulder-mounted Charge Light on/off in emergency situations, open up the emote wheel (hold either bracket key by default) and select "Light!". For faster use, emotes can also be bound directly to either of the two emote keys by mousing over them in the emote wheel and pressing the desired key.

Radar: When mounted on your shoulder, a Glowtail will chatter and give a buff to notify when a max-level dino or when there is an enemy player/creature nearby.

Pet: Like all other shoulder mounts and other small creatures, the Glowtail can make a suitable companion on your endeavors.

Backpack: Like all shoulder pets, anything held in its inventory will weigh 50% less on a player's shoulder.

Light Source: As the caverns in Aberration are often dark and dreary, having an easy to toggle, far reaching light source whether walking or on a mount is very useful.

Notes/Trivia

  • The creature was first revealed in Community Crunch 103 on September 15, 2017.[2]
  • This creature is perhaps inspired by the common flying dragon (Draco volans) and the various prehistoric flying lizards (Icarosaurus, Xianglong and Coelurosauravus), as they all have a rib supported patagia on the side of their bellies.
  • Despite being mentioned as a herbivore and only eat flora in the taming process, Glowtails also consume meat as a food source.
  • Compared to the rest of the charge pets, the Glowtail tends to have the highest amount of Charge Regeneration, allowing it to recharge its light incredibly quickly. This can be crucial for a survivor who needs near-constant protection from   Reapers and   Nameless over a sustained period of time.
  • While the  Ascerbic Mushroom is the Glowtail's preferred consumption of mushrooms, putting too many of such mushroom in Glowtail's inventory will cause Glowtail to be rendered unconscious should there not be any other food source inside Glowtail's inventory or nearby trough.
  • Wild Glowtails can often be seen clinging to the walls or ceilings in a manner similar to that of the  Megalania.
  •  Carbonemys,  Titanoboa and  Sarco were reptiles to have survived the events that led to the degradation of the Ark that is now known as Aberration, while other reptiles that may once have existed on the Ark, like  Kaprosuchus,  Thorny Dragon and the  Megalania have long since went extinct. The Glowtail however appears to have evolved as a result of the Aberration disaster and it is quite possible that the Glowtail may even be the surviving descendant of the  Megalania or  Thorny Dragon, since both of them are the only lizards in the entirety of the ARKs so far, and both the  Megalania and the Glowtail share the innate ability to cling to walls.
  • On the map of Valguero, the Glowtail can be found in The Unknown, a radiation poisoned, underground biome.
  • Glowtails look very similar to modern and prehistoric flying lizards, as well as some gecko or salamander/newt species.
  • When a Glowtail is knocked out, they curl up before falling asleep, similar to a cat or dog
