Manticore is a Boss in  ARK: Survival Evolved's expansion packs Scorched Earth, Ragnarok and Valguero and in  ARK: Survival Ascended Scorched Earth.

Basic Info

Appearance

The Manticore is a hybrid that consists of the body and head of a lion, with three rows of sharp teeth, bat-like wings and ears, and a scorpion's tail that has toxic and lethal venom. While also having ram horns (two pointing upward and two curled downward) on the top of its head, sharp claws, and spikes, its fur is a tan brown coloration and its eyes glow a permanent orange glow.

Its appearance changes on difficulty with the Beta being a more Orange color and the Alpha being a Red color with deep blood red fur.

Color Scheme and Regions

X mark.svg

The Manticore always spawns with the same color scheme and has no color regions.

This means it is currently impossible to make alterations to the Manticore's colors.

Wild Stats Level-up

Type in values of a wild creature to see on which stats it's emphasized. Green values on a high-level creature are very good for breeding. If you have already tamed your creature you can try to recover the breeding stats with an external tool.[1]

Manticore (Gamma) (Easy)

The stat-calculator does not work in the mobile-view, see here for alternatives: Apps

Note that after the creature is tamed it gets bonuses on some stats depending on the taming effectiveness. This makes it hard to retrieve the levels on a tamed creature, so this tool is only for wild ones, but gives a first impression, how well the stats are distributed.

Combat

General

The floor of the arena is teeming with  Deathworms. The Manticore will primarily fly about the arena shooting purple bolts in different directions at once while using its tail to inflict  torpor. Near the end of the battle Deathworms and later  Rock Elementals start spawning and can easily trap and kill your creatures.

Strategy

  • It is best to not leave the platform so you can avoid the Deathworms.
  • Kill the Deathworms in the arena first. Keep to ranged combat to avoid the worst of torpor damage. Try to run away from the Rock Elementals or bring a lot of explosive power.

Recommended Tames

  •  Wyvern Rushing can be used as a substitute to rush the Manticore instead of Rex Rushing. On top of that, because of their ability to fly, they can more easily avoid the Deathworms and Rock Elementals that spawn. however to compared to the Rex, Wyverns have much less base Torpor being roughly half as much and when mounted are prone to being grounded due to the Manticore's stamina drain. (725 base  Torpidity)
  • A  Yutyrannus or 2 (preferably mate boosted) should always be brought into any arena as it's one of the most valuable creature for Boss fights due to its courage roar ability and good stats, making them a jack-of-all-trades mount. (1550 base  Torpidity)
  • The Common strategy of  Rex Rushing is almost always a good strategy for any boss due to their high health and damage. (1550 base  Torpidity)
  • If players are willing to put the effort into micromanaging their food, the  Daeodon can also be valuable due to their healing ability. (800 base  Torpidity)
  •  Argentavis are a good substitute to  Wyvern because of their ability to wear saddles. (600 base  Torpidity)
  • For players that want to use an unorthodox method, utilize 10-16 Mantis in your team as their damage with 500-700% swords can be terrifying in a good way where each one can deal massive damage. However, consider that their torpor is rather low and complement their numbers with bulkier tames such as Rexes and a Yutyrannus.
  • If you have access to crystal isles a  Tropeognathus can be useful due to the flak cannon and jet boost.

Dangers

  • Improper preparation of your tames can lead to disaster such as trying to mix fliers and land tames.
  • The Manticore can inflict large amounts of torpor and decrease stamina with its tail, from which it can also shoot spikes like a Thorny Dragon. Be careful! Torpor gained from these spikes can't be lowered with stimulant like normal torpor inflicting attacks unless it's on a human. Bring stimulant and water for yourself.
  • The Manticore's slam attack can potentially damage a survivor, even if they are on a dino. Care must be taken when its landing.
  • The Deathworms in the arena will swarm any player or creature on the ground, which is especially dangerous to those that are unconscious from the Manticore's attacks.
    • 5 Deathworms spawn during the fight
  • The Rock Elementals can spring up for damage if a creature or player is close enough and that will trap a creature inside of it and it will be doomed.
    • 5 Rock Elementals spawn during the fight.
  • The Deathworms' attacks have a large area of effect that can quickly drain the health of many of your creatures if they are close together.
  • Upon start of the encounter the Manticore can glitch in the air. For this reason it's worth always bringing an Assault Rifle or a Pump Action Shotgun with a lot of ammo to shoot the Manticore with. This seems to cause it to aggro you and un-glitch. However, be cautious when shooting unmounted as you may be targeted with a torpor attack.
  • Make sure to not bring any light pets as they may cause the manticore to bug and not land. This includes Glowtails, Featherlights, and Bulbdogs.
  • Within the Ragnarok Arena players will also have to watch out for the Dragon and its minions of which can damage riders, the Manticore will also summon Griffins instead of Deathworms in this fight.
  • Within the Forsaken Oasis players will have to be cautious of both the Dragon and Megapithecus when dealing with the Manticore.

Weakness

  • Although it is supposedly patched, it may still be possible to pin down the Manticore with a pack of Rexes.
  • The Manticore has very low health – the lowest health of any boss to date if you don't count the mini bosses on Ragnarok – and can go down very fast. However, enough space must be available for it to land or it will spend a lot of time floating in the air. Ensure your tames are grouped, and assign locations for them to move when they are not attacking to give space for the Manticore to land.

Spotlight

Lore

  • In lore, between the time Nosti fell and Helena arrived on Scorched Earth, Raia defeated the Manticore, making her the first survivor to defeat it.
  • Later in the Scorched Earth lore, Rockwell and the ARK's alpha tribe "The Burning Phoenix" defeated the Manticore.
  • While it's never described the Manticore can likely summon Rock Elementals and Deathworms out of fear as it is a powerful creature that is likely unrivaled on Scorched Earth by all but the other Guardians (of which are never revealed).
  • The Manticore is the only guardian to be revered by Survivors as there was a whole city that dedicated itself to the Manticore.

Notes/Trivia

For information pertaining specifically to the real-world Manticore, see the relevant Wikipedia article.

  • The Manticore is a creature from Persian mythology.
    • The Manticore is a chimera, traditionally consisting of the body of a lion, the wings of a bat, the tail of a scorpion and a human face, although ARK's Manticore does not seem to have this last feature..
    • The name 'Manticore' roughly translates to 'Man-Eater'.
  • The Manticore was the first Expansion Pack Boss for Ark.
    • The Manticore is also the only Expansion Pack Boss to be included into official Mod Maps.
  • The Manticore is the only Canon Guardian to not be playable in the Survive The Ark Mission in Genesis Part 2.
  • The Manticore is the 2nd boss to specifically be based on a real mythological creature, the first being the  Dragon and the 3rd being the  Crystal Wyvern Queen.
    • Interestingly all 3 can fly.
  • Since release of v294 Beta Manticore will unlock the Tek Dedicated Storage
  • A force tamed Manticore does not and will not obey whistles.
  • If spawned in the Manticore will be broken and not work well however it's not as bad as the  Dragon.
  • Despite the Manticore boss battle happening after the player defeats the  Overseer lore wise, the Manticore was released before the Overseer was (hence why scorched earth lacks a proper ending like the other Expansion Packs).
  • An ascension sequence for Scorched Earth and the Manticore has been introduced in 355.3, including a level cap increase (regardless of the map the Manticore is defeated on).
