The Moeder Arena during One Tough Moeder, accessible via the  Mission Dispatcher on Genesis: Part 1.

Moeder, Master of the Ocean (moe-der) is a creature in  ARK: Survival Evolved's Expansion Pack Genesis: Part 1.

Basic Info

Behavior

During the majority of the boss fight, Moeder will hide in a corner and summon her Eel minions to attack her aggressors. When all Eel minions are destroyed, she'll emerge and attack, before eventually retreating again.

Appearance

Moeder is a giant, scale-plated eel with a massive, blue-hued mouth and relatively small blue eyes. Her natural appearance (gamma) glows a green bioluminescence. She is roughly 250 meters in length.

Lore

Moeder is one of the 5 Master AI within the Genesis Simulation and is one of (if not) the smartest of the 5 Master AI's, as she managed to avoid being deleted by the Corrupted Master Controller.

Color Scheme and Regions

X mark.svg

The Moeder, Master of the Ocean always spawns with the same color scheme and has no color regions.

This means it is currently impossible to make alterations to the Moeder, Master of the Ocean's colors.

Eel Minion

Moeder will spawn  Eel Minions. They look like much smaller versions of Moeder herself but with less bioluminescence glowing blue instead of green and are mostly white in color, they are also unique in that they have boss health bars unlike other minions and more similarly to things like the  Broodmother and  Megapithecus technically making them in and of themselves bosses just like Moeder.

Wild Stats Level-up

Type in values of a wild creature to see on which stats it's emphasized. Green values on a high-level creature are very good for breeding. If you have already tamed your creature you can try to recover the breeding stats with an external tool.[1]

Moeder, Master of the Ocean

The stat-calculator does not work in the mobile-view, see here for alternatives: Apps

Note that after the creature is tamed it gets bonuses on some stats depending on the taming effectiveness. This makes it hard to retrieve the levels on a tamed creature, so this tool is only for wild ones, but gives a first impression, how well the stats are distributed.

Unlocks

Combat

This section describes how to fight against Moeder.

General

The fight against Moeder alternates between 2 phases. The first phase will have Moeder hiding and invulnerable while her  Eel Minions either bite at survivors and tames or discharge electricity in varying methods to assault them and apply the electrocuted debuff, greatly reducing damage output and movement speed of those affected for a short time. Once they're all slain, Moeder will emerge from her hole, becoming vulnerable and dealing a lot of damage with her massive bite. Once the fight against Moeder persists for a minute or so, or after a certain threshold of damage is dealt, she will unleash a massive barrage of electric orbs, become immune to damage, go back to hiding, and the minion phase starts again. There will be at least 3 minion phases before Moeder can be defeated. Underwater whirlpools will also spawn partway into the fight, causing some disorientation but deal no damage themselves. Overall, this boss fight is not too difficult and there are a variety of methods to overcome Moeder's wrath.

Strategy

  • During the Minion phase, it is important to monitor your health closely as the eels can electrify you, even when mounted. Bringing medical brews is strongly advised. Also, Moeder will slowly heal over time whilst in hiding, so it is important to kill the minions as fast as possible to stop her healing too much.
  • During the Moeder phase, try to keep creatures above or away from her mouth, as her bite deals a lot of damage, but ensure to attack constantly, as she heals when not being attacked. After a certain amount of time has elapsed, Moeder will become immune to damage and let out a barrage of electrical orbs before sinking and initiating another minion phase. These orbs can be dodged with smaller creatures but larger ones may struggle.
  • As much as possible, never attempt to exit the creature that is mounted. The arena may sometimes spawn whirlpools that are harder to avoid or resist than the ones randomly appearing within Ocean Biome.
  • Although it may be obvious as this is an underwater fight, having a SCUBA tank available is highly advised to keep yourself from drowning. Alternatively, a Megachelon can be used to provide oxygen.

Recommended Tames

  • A horde of  X-Mosasaurus, especially with high-armor saddles and imprinting, can quickly dispatch Moeder on any difficulty due to their health pool and damage output.
  •  Tusoteuthis can be useful due to their ability to grab which could be used to pin and kill the  Eel Minions Moeder spawns and they have strong stats.
  •  X-Megalodon can be useful as ranged tames since they can wear Tek Saddles they can fire away at the  Eel Minions and Moeder. A standard pack of them can also deal heavy damage with their pack bonus and are much more accessible than the Mosasaurus. Make sure to bring more than 9 to ensure a full pack bonus if any are lost.
  • The  X-Basilosaurus is immune to the shocking attacks of Moeder and her  Eel Minions, but only ridden ones will attack due to the deep depths disrupting their behavior. They are also easy to tame and their large health pool makes passive damage from being too deep rather negligible. They can be used as a tank to allow other creatures using Tek saddles to fire from afar.
  • An odd yet effective tactic is to utilize a  Megachelon and a couple Giganotosaurus, which can surprisingly be brought into this boss fight. The Megachelon provides oxygen to the Gigas while they handle Moeder with relative ease. It's advised to have some creatures handling the eel minions if this strategy is employed.
  • A group of 3-4 Plesiosaurus can act as a distraction against Moeder since they have one of the highest movement speeds, if not the highest, that can be utilized to distract Moeder long enough for your main force to swarm it and deal damage.

Dangers

  • Moeder and her  Eel Minions' shock attacks can quickly kill you if you don’t monitor your health as they hurt you even when mounted.
  • Moeder's bite deals considerable damage, and at the higher difficulties can whittle down the health of any creature.
  • Her minions can quickly swarm a single target, zapping constantly to deal constant damage to riders and permanently slow down any tames caught in the swarm, any tame with a slow turning circle may be unable to attack as they swim around it.
  • The minions have difficulty variations just like Moeder being stronger the higher the difficulty unlike all other boss minions.
  • In rare situations, creatures can get meshed and killed by anti-mesh countermeasures in this arena. Try to avoid the arena boundaries if all possible.

Weakness

  • Moeder has a massive hitbox and is relatively slow, making her vulnerable to a tame to keep her attention while others can use tek saddles to fire from a distance.

Notes/Trivia

  • Moeder is the 3rd largest creature in the game only being smaller than the  King Titan and  Rockwell.
  • Moeder is the first aquatic boss battle in the game.
  • Moeder and the  Eel Minions might be inspired by the monsters Charybdis and Scylla from mythology who are always seen together.
    • The Scylla inspiration is the part of the fight where Moeder lies in wait while her Eel Minions attack the players which in mythology Scylla would hide and pick off sailors from ships with its multiple heads.
    • The Charybdis inspiration comes from the fact in mythology Charybdis is depicted as a massive fish capable of creating whirlpools similarly to Moeder in her second phase.
  • Moeder is shown to be extremely intelligent as she shut herself down before she can be turned off like the other 4 Master AI in the Genesis Simulation.
  • Interestingly the  Eel Minions she spawns also have boss health bars technically making them also bosses within the boss fight.
    • While it may seem odd and unique it does share this trait with the Overseer boss who of which will eventually "retreat" like the Moeder and transform into a elemental variant of one of the three Island Guardians which must be killed in order to confront the Overseers main form again.
    • The  Eel Minions also change variations based on difficulty similarly to Moeder making them the only "Minions" which have difficulty variations.
  • The Moeder bears some resemblance to a Frilled Shark with a long, eel-like body and various rows of teeth within its mouth.
  • If you look closely at the eel minions for the initial concept art for Moeder you'll notice that they appear to be somewhat translucent similarly to some real life deep sea animals however in game they are not translucent so this was likely a mistake left in the concept art.
    • However there was a creature that is translucent in Genesis: Part 1 which is the  Astrocetus which is translucent from underneath as you can see it's bones and organs.
  • Moeder is the Dutch word for Mother.
  • The Moeder shares quite a few similarities with the Broodmother and Crystal Wyvern Queen as:
    • Moeder is the mother of the  Eel Minions, similarly to how  Broodmother Lysrix is the mother of the  Araneo and how the  Crystal Wyvern Queen is the mother of the  Crystal Wyvern.
    • All 3 bosses are confirmed to be female.
    • All 3 are Bosses (though lore wise Moeder is one of the 5 Master AI and serves a entirely different purpose than the Broodmother Lysrix, one of the Guardians and originated from the Genesis Simulation. The Crystal Wyvern Queen comes from an official mod map therefore doesn't have any story significance therefore they are different categories of bosses).
  • Moeder is also the strongest Aquatic creature in the game.
  • If spawned in Moeder will not work properly similarly to the  Dragon,  Manticore and  Desert Titan.
    • It however isn't as bad as the Dragon as it is capable of moving, attacking, and is able to still be controlled when ridden unlike the Dragon.
