The Shinehorn (formerly known as the Lantern Goat) is one of the creatures in the Aberration-DLC of ARK: Survival Evolved. It is the adorable miniature relative of Bovids like Ovis and Cervids like  Megaloceros.

Basic Info

Dossier

This section is intended to be an exact copy of what the survivor Helena Walker, the author of the dossiers, has written. There may be some discrepancies between this text and the in-game creature.

Wild

Most commonly found in the upper chambers of the caverns, Microluminis cerynitis is at once elegant and adorable. As with its relatives, it is entirely peaceful, and no threat to survivors. After closer study, by which I mean very scientific bouts of cuddling, I've found that it shares traits with both bovids and cervids. However in the soft glow of its charge light, Microluminis cerynitis always gave me the impression that were it larger, it would be right at home pulling Artemis' chariot.

Domesticated

An exceptionally well-mannered and huggable companion, Microluminis cerynitis is an excellent choice of pet for any survivor. Whether it is providing a source of charged light from your shoulder or playfully bounding up beside you, its presence is sure to brighten up your day.

Locations

The Bioluminescent zone, lunar biome and rockwells garden are spawns for the shinehorn.

Behavior

The Shinehorn is a passive critter, and a small and defenseless one at that, so it is quite flighty when danger approaches. They use their glowing antlers to navigate and scare away  Nameless.

Appearance

The Shinehorn is a small, cute, fluffy goat/deer ungulate with small, glowing antlers. It has a small juvenile-like stature, with a large head and eyes. It walks on cloven hooves.

Color Scheme and Regions

This section displays the Shinehorn's natural colors and regions. For demonstration, the regions below are colored red over an albino Shinehorn. The colored squares shown underneath each region's description are the colors that the Shinehorn will randomly spawn with to provide an overall range of its natural color scheme. Hover your cursor over a color to display its name and ID.

This information can be used to alter the Shinehorn's regions by entering cheat SetTargetDinoColor <ColorRegion> <ColorID> in the cheat console. For instance, cheat SetTargetDinoColor 0 6 would color the Shinehorn's "main body" magenta.

Wild Stats Level-up

Type in values of a wild creature to see on which stats it's emphasized. Green values on a high-level creature are very good for breeding. If you have already tamed your creature you can try to recover the breeding stats with an external tool.[1]

Shinehorn

The stat-calculator does not work in the mobile-view, see here for alternatives: Apps

Note that after the creature is tamed it gets bonuses on some stats depending on the taming effectiveness. This makes it hard to retrieve the levels on a tamed creature, so this tool is only for wild ones, but gives a first impression, how well the stats are distributed.

Abilities

Active

Headbutt
  • The Shinehorn headbutts the target for 12 damage.
  • Can be used every 0.67s by both a rider and the AI.

Passive

Light Pet

The Light Pets are a subcategory of shoulder pets that prduces its own bioluminescence. To activate its light use the wheel menu or use the Clap emote on the emotes wheel menu.

When activated the light applies  Charged Light effect on all the players and creatures nearby, reducing the hordes of  Nameless and  Reapers that appear, along with disable their natural armor, however this also attracts  Seekers and increases their  Melee Damage and damage resistance.

The stats of the light pets receive some changes on their uses, in addition to its conventional use, the stats of  Stamina,  Oxygen and  Melee Damage changes their names to  Charge Capacity,  Charge Regeneration and  Charge Emission Range respectively and they scales that specific value of the light.

Combat

General

The Shinehorn is a weak passive tame creature, and it poses little threat to any survivor other than the possibility of it attracting predators.

Strategy

Hit it or shoot it, nothing much to it.

Weaponry

As a passive creature, the Shinehorn won't fight back when attacked. It will flee or most likely die from whatever is attacking it due to its low health.

Dangers

Like the other Charge light-giving dinos, Shinehorns do not fight back when hurt, and only run off. Its charge light might attract other predators such as  Raptor and  Ravager towards itself.

Weakness

Shinehorn has very low health when compared to other wild charge light dinos, and will die at a single hit from any melee weapons provided they deal enough damage. They do not fight back either and only flee when hurt.

Taming

The Shinehorn is unable to be tamed through the standard tranquilize-and-feed methods, and must be tamed non-violently.

Preferred Food

Berries ONLY after tame and full grown.

Utility

As a Charge Light creature, Shinehorn carries charge, which replenishes over time while its light is turned off. When the light is turned on, it provides survivors with the Charged Light buff, protecting from  Nameless and  Reaper ambush, but attracting  Seekers. If set to active, it can also detect both nearby enemy players, and nearby creatures of maximum level.

Due to the nature of its passive state, Shinehorn cannot fight back, and should never be used as combat dino.

It provides a balance of Charge Capacity and Recharge rate.

Roles

Anti-Nameless/Reaper Ambush: Since the Shinehorn can be shoulder mounted like every other Charge Light, it provides a charge to prevent Nameless pack from emerging and weakens Reapers. This however, will attract  Seeker. To quickly toggle the shoulder-mounted Charge Light on/off in emergency situations, open up the emote wheel (hold either bracket key by default) and select "Light!". For faster use, emotes can also be bound directly to either of the two emote keys by mousing over them in the emote wheel and pressing the desired key.

Radar: When mounted on your shoulder, a Shinehorn will chatter and give a buff to notify when a max-level dino or when there is an enemy player/creature nearby.

Pet: Like all other shoulder mounts and other small creatures, the Shinehorn can make a suitable companion on your endeavors.

Backpack: Like all shoulder pets, anything held in its inventory will weigh 50% less on a player's shoulder.

Light Source: As the caverns in Aberration are often dark and dreary, having a easy to toggle, far reaching light source whether walking or on a mount is very useful.

Notes/Trivia

  • The Shinehorn is the only light pet that the Dossier gets the diet right as all other light pets are said to be herbivores however in game they will eat meat.
  • The creature was first announced in Community Crunch 106 on October 7, 2017.[2]
  • The Shinehorn is often thought of as the best jack-of-all-trades light pet, as all of its Charge stats are usually slightly above average, making an excellent all around companion to keep  Nameless away and weaken  Reapers.
  • The Shinehorn's running is like that of a young lamb, bounding and hopping jumps.
  • A common theory suggests that this creature could be some kind of cave dwelling Jackalope.
  • The first part creature's scientific name means 'small light', and the second part, as alluded to by the dossier, is the name of the mythical deer that belonged to Artemis, the Goddess of the Hunt, and was captured as the third labor of Heracles.[3]
  • As Helena points out in the dossier, the Shinehorn appears to share many physical characteristics with both Cervidae(deer, elk, and moose) and Bovinae(goats, sheep, cows, and antelopes). The Shinehorn in fact could very well be a genetic combination of the  Megaloceros and the  Ovis.
    • Whether either one(or both) could be the ancestor to the Shinehorn, it is important to note that only the Ovis survived the events of degradation that led to what is now known as Aberration; the Megaloceros instead perished. Along with the Ovis, the Shinehorn still continues to survive likely due to their small size and fecundity.
  • As of v300.6 on PC, the Shinehorn is the one and only charge pet that does not exist on the map Valguero, whereas all other charge pets either spawn in the The Emerald Forest, The Unknown, or both.

Lore

  • In lore, Mei Yin Li had a Shinehorn named Xiao.
  • Towards the end of Aberration, Rockwell injects one of the Tek Tribe's Shinehorns with molten Edmundium, turning it into a corrupted monstrous antelope. It was then killed by Diana and a few other survivors upon discovering its' existence. This however, greatly enraged Rockwell as he claimed that they striped away it's only chance of ascending into godhood.
