The Microraptor (MIKE-row-rap-tor) is one of the creatures in ARK: Survival Evolved.

Basic Info

Dossier

This section is intended to be an exact copy of what the survivor Helena Walker, the author of the dossiers, has written. There may be some discrepancies between this text and the in-game creature.

Species

Microraptor gnarilongus

Time

Early Cretaceous

Diet

Carnivore

Temperament

Aggressive

Wild

Microraptor Gnarilongus is one of the smallest non-avian dinosaurs on the Island. Incredibly fast for its size, Microraptor is a voracious carnivore. Aggressive towards anything regardless of size, Microraptor fancies itself an apex predator. It will attack humans on sight, especially if it's not alone. When hunting, Microraptor's speed is only one of its assets. While not quite capable of sustained flight, its wings allow it to stay aloft for several seconds while jumping. This allows Microraptor to attack its prey's vulnerable areas, as well as search for small river fish. Notable, the creature also tends to use this ability to knock oblivious humans off of their mounts.

Domesticated

While not a powerhouse against armed enemies, Microraptor is particularly suited to dismounting enemy riders. Microraptors natural tendency to attack weaker creatures means they can ignore the mount while attacking the rider with leaps of fury.

Behavior

In spite of the dossier's statement of the Microraptor being an aggressive hunter, this is only partially true. The Microraptor will attack a survivor that comes close, but only stuns them briefly before fleeing, without doing much damage to the survivor. They seem more skittish and timid rather than truly predatory.

Appearance

Microraptor is a small carnivorous dinosaur strongly resembling a bird with a reptilian face. The large feathers on their limbs act as primitive wings, allowing them to glide for short distances in pursuit of arboreal prey or to attack mounted riders.

Color Scheme and Regions

This section displays the Microraptor's natural colors and regions. For demonstration, the regions below are colored red over an albino Microraptor. The colored squares shown underneath each region's description are the colors that the Microraptor will randomly spawn with to provide an overall range of its natural color scheme. Hover your cursor over a color to display its name and ID.

This information can be used to alter the Microraptor's regions by entering cheat SetTargetDinoColor <ColorRegion> <ColorID> in the cheat console. For instance, cheat SetTargetDinoColor 0 6 would color the Microraptor's "body" magenta.

Wild Stats Level-up

Type in values of a wild creature to see on which stats it's emphasized. Green values on a high-level creature are very good for breeding. If you have already tamed your creature you can try to recover the breeding stats with an external tool.[1]

Microraptor

The stat-calculator does not work in the mobile-view, see here for alternatives: Apps

Note that after the creature is tamed it gets bonuses on some stats depending on the taming effectiveness. This makes it hard to retrieve the levels on a tamed creature, so this tool is only for wild ones, but gives a first impression, how well the stats are distributed.

Abilities

Active

Bite
  • The Microraptor bites the target for 8 damage.
  • Can be used every 0.89s by both a rider and the AI.

Pounce
  • The Microraptor pounces and dismounts the creature's rider for 8 damage.
  • This attacks  Stuns the rider for 10 seconds.
  • The Microraptor needs to physically reach the creature's rider in order to do this attack.
  • Can be used every 0.89s by both a rider and the AI.

Glide
  • The Microraptor starts gliding once it has a creature with a rider as a target
  • It will glide directly to the rider trying to Pounce him.

Passive

Pack Boost

The Microraptor receives the Pack Boost whenever it is near to another allied Microraptor. A "pack" of two Microraptors will receive a +1 Bonus, which will go up to +4 in a Group of 5 or more Microraptors, they receive +25% extra  Melee Damage and +10% damage resistance per extra pack member up to 4 members.

Combat

General

The Microraptor employs hit-and-run tactics if you get too close. They will not attempt to kill you but only stun you then sprint away. The Micro's strategy is to knock you off your mount and kill you while you are immobilized. Once it has done so, it will then flee to escape the bloodthirsty beast you took on your journey. After this, it will attempt to kill you once more while trying to get your stuff back. However, if a Micro is in a group, this does not occur as they get a pack bonus and will not run away.

Strategy

Evidently, these creatures are not strong. They are easily killed once trapped in a bola or bear trap with almost any weapon. However, they can attack by surprise (they most often will), and if in a group, the stun can be reset as soon as it is about to end. For certain, it is one of the most annoying creatures in the game as it can leave you exposed to other predators, and it is impossible to prepare for.

If the combat music (for small predators) begins while you are in redwoods, but there is no obvious predator nearby, that means a Microraptor is preparing to attack you (presumably at your back). Get off from your mount as soon as that happens to prevent stun.

Weaponry

Can be easily killed with almost any weapon if trapped in a bola or bear trap.

Dangers

While the Microraptor itself usually does not pose any true threat, its ability to knock riders off their mounts and immobilize them can allow more aggressive dinos to finish you off. However, the Micro can be particularly dangerous to riders who have just been badly hurt in a fight and are close to death or are low level, as the Micro can kill them easily while they're immobilized and unable to defend themselves.

A Micro-Troodon-Terror combo can eliminate a redwood explorer in mere seconds, while the victims have no chance to react once they get knocked off from their mounts and are stunned.

Weakness

There are two simple ways to kill a Microraptor. Due to their speed and agility, chasing them will not reap good results and may land you in front of a hungry Rex. Instead, it is recommended you use a bola on the Micro and take it down while it is immobilized. The other method relates to being attacked while riding a mount; the best thing to do in this situation is to get off your mount and allow your pet to destroy the little feathered fiend. It is also best to whistle neutral to your mount after getting off it to avoid it not doing anything and simply watching while you are being attacked.

Taming

For general info about domesticating a wild creature see Taming.

KO Strategy

Stand far enough away to be safe, hit the Microraptor with a bola, and finally tranq until KO. Note that while bola'd, the Microraptor will still make small, weak lunges at you.

Utility

Roles

  • Bodyguard: In PvP servers, the microraptor is incredibly useful in a battle due to its ability to hit players off their mounts and stun them. Just whistle attack and it'll be sure to open an opponent to gunfire! (Level up Health and Damage)
    • Early PvP Bodyguard: Thanks to its diet, a 150 Microraptor only requires 1  Rare Flower to tame, allowing its quick access to new players and providing them a good protection against players with more time playing on the server. (Level up Health and Damage)
    • Pack Dismounter: The Microraptor in packs is annoying for any player who wants to pass through them, having a decent Microraptor pack protecting certain areas with turrets might be helpful to delay the enemy, be careful with the  Stego's riders. (Level up Health)
  • Backpack: Like the rest of the shoulder pets, the Microraptor's weight reduces by halve its total amount on the player's shoulder, making it a good option to save objects inside of it. (Level up Weight and some Health)
  • Pack Hunter: Thanks to its pack boost, the Microraptor is decent hunting in packs due to the boost that they receive in pack on their  Damage and damage resistance. (Level up Health and Damage)
  • Pet: Shoulder-mounted creatures are often valued as pets, and Microraptor is no exception. The thick plumage and broad tail can make a brightly-colored Microraptor a striking accessory to your outfit.

A Microraptor can knock you off the following mounts (If the Microraptor starts attacking from the floor level):

NOTE: The Microraptor can reach and  stun riders from almost any mount, but it needs more base height to actually reach them from high mounts. It also needs to have physical contact with the riders, so a basic 1x1 box protecting the riders above a platform saddle will work as defense from them.

Notes/Trivia

For information pertaining specifically to the real-world Microraptor, see the relevant Wikipedia article.

  • Dossier released July 20, 2015.[2]
  • The Microraptor was one of the first dinosaurs found with feathers.
  • In real life, it is believed to have eaten insects and small lizards rather than larger animals.
  • Despite being listed in the dossier as a carnivore, its two favorite foods are Rare Flowers and Rare Mushrooms.
  • The skull attributed to Microraptor in the dossier actually belongs to the famous Velociraptor, and it is nearly identical in appearance to this picture of a Velociraptor skull.[3]
  • In-game, the Microraptor can sprint at high speeds. It actually could not sprint in real life as its feathers, and ungainly posture was much more adept to an arboreal lifestyle. It is also thought to be incredibly unlikely that it could fly like is seen in the game and possibly not aggressive toward larger animals.
  • It shares its sound with the Archaeopteryx.
    • The Microraptor also has an incredibly similar model to that of the Archaeopteryx.
      • They create the same calls and sounds, and have very similar animations.
        • They also live in the same territory, the Redwood Forest, causing players to misrecognize them.
          • The easiest way to tell them apart is that the Microraptor's tail is broader at the end (more fan shaped), while the Archaeopteryx's tail tapers (more fern shaped). The Microraptor also has a crest protruding from its head, while the Archaeopteryx does not.
  • Despite the Microraptor's size, it is among one of the fastest creatures in the game, though not at levels seen in the Managarmr.
    • It is undoubtedly the fastest tamed creature in The Island.

Changelog

Patch  ARK: Survival Evolved Changes
255.0 Microraptor is added to the game.
