Shastasaurus carmentellum

TemperamentCurious
- Wild
This odd variant of Shastasaurus seems as curious about humans as its distant relative Ichthyosaur. It sure got my attention when one of these sea monsters swam up to have a look at me! Luckily, its bulk turns out to be worse than its bite. Shastasaurus has weaponized the ultrasonic chirps it uses for echolocation. It can focus those sounds into a tight cone that disorients prey, or widen the effect to blast apart a school of fish in a concussive wave.
- Domesticated
Taming a Shastasaurus was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I brought along some Ichthyosaur pals to entertain their larger cousin while I scraped some of its itchy barnacles off with a sickle. From then on, I had a gigantic escort in deep water. Some tribes manage to kit out their finny friend with a periscope, torpedo bays, and even a cargo hold… Those Shastasaurs end up looking like something from the old kids’ cartoon with cavemen who turned dinos into cars and submarines!

- For a comparison of the stats of all creatures, see Base Creature Statistics.
- For an explanation of exactly how the levelup calculation works, see Creature Stats Calculation.
- 1These are the base speeds of the tamed creature at 100% Movement Speed, i.e. without a possible taming bonus.
- 2These are the speeds of the creature once tamed including a possible taming bonus and no imprinting bonus.
- For a comparison of the speeds of all creatures, see Base Creature Speeds.
Wild Stats Level-up
Type in values of a wild creature to see on which stats it's emphasized. Green values on a high-level creature are very good for breeding. If you have already tamed your creature you can try to recover the breeding stats with an external tool.[1]
The stat-calculator does not work in the mobile-view, see here for alternatives: Apps
Note that after the creature is tamed it gets bonuses on some stats depending on the taming effectiveness. This makes it hard to retrieve the levels on a tamed creature, so this tool is only for wild ones, but gives a first impression, how well the stats are distributed.

Combat
Taming
Ride a tamed Ichthyosaurus close to the Shasta that you want to tame, it will start following you, after that you need to go to the surface and the taming progress will start.
Once up top the surface, dismount to allow the Shasta to communicate to the Ichthy and use a Sickle to remove three leeches indicated on the sides of the Shastasaurus, the player will only have 30 seconds (For every domesticated Ichthy nearby up to 3) to complete this task or the Shastasaurus will lost taming effectiveness. After remove the three leaches the Shastasaurus will require feeding, so the player needs to swim closer to the mouth and feed it having the taming food on the last hotbar slot such as
Extraordinary Kibble or
Fish Meat. Repeat this progress until the Shasta is tamed.
Utility
Roles
- Mobile Base: The Shastasaurus' submarine saddle functions as a huge platform saddle, offering the ability to create a base inside as well as serving as a mobile creature transporter throughout any map. (Level up Health and Weight)
- Taming Assistant: The Shastasaurus' saddle has a periscope function that works exactly as a
Tek Binoculars, and because the Shasta saddle only requires level 100 to unlock and a
Tek Replicator to craft it is easier to get the saddle instead of the binoculars, much more expensive tho, and it can only be used to see the water creatures or creatures close to the beach.
- Artillery: the Shastasaurus' saddle can shoot torpedoes if the Shasta has some on its inventory.

Notes
For information pertaining specifically to the real-world Shastasaurus, see the relevant Wikipedia article.
- The line "Those Shastasaurs end up looking like something from the old kids’ cartoon with cavemen who turned dinos into cars and submarines!" in the dossier may be a reference to the Hanna-Barbera animated sitcom, "The Flintstones"
- Shastasaurus is the first aquatic creature to win a creature vote
- Shastasaurus was previously delayed due to the fact the Shastasaurus needed more time to execute properly, Rewriting was needed on some of the basing code of UE to stay in local space on the creature even when in different physics modes (falling/jumping). On the plus side, it came out along with a full large-sized vehicle-worthy basing system
- Wild Shastasaurus usually jump above the water surface, however once tamed they can't do it. This change of behavior is probably because of the
Shastasaurus Submarine Saddle, because its important to have the saddle always under the water in order to work propertly, the tamed Shastas loses the jump ability with this purpose.
- It is believed that the shastasaurus is about the size of the
Leedsichthys. However, it is estimated that the in-game version is depicted to be large over a 100 meters long making it one of the largest aquatic creature in the game.
- The real Shastasaurus is estimated to 21 metres (69 ft) in length and weighing 81.5 metric tons (89.8 short tons) which is slightly smaller than the in-game version.
