Wild

The Yutyrannus saevus is believed to be related to the Tyrannosaurus rex, but it is noticeably different upon first glance. Feathered creatures are not necessarily viewed as dangerous predators in the same light as other theropods. However, the Yutyrannus strikes fear into even the Island's most skilled hunters. There are few wild predators that are able to pack-hunt alongside the generally hostile Carnotaurus, like the Yutyrannus does, with such ease. It is also the only creature I've seen to consistently induce a state of panic in opponents with its roar. Upon hearing it, most creatures in the area will flee for safety.

Domesticated

A domesticated Yutyrannus can be a powerful offensive or defensive addition to war parties. With its mighty roar, it can induce fear in opposing creatures. Meanwhile, Yutyrannus can be trained to develop a confidence-boosting Battle-Cry which counteracts enemy attempts to induce fear, while also bolstering the resolve of allies, and may even draw wild Carnotaurus to its aid. These unique "leadership" qualities make the Yutyrannus a versatile, and at times, a necessary creature to have on your side during large-scale confrontations!

Behavior

Like many larger predators, Yutyrannus is an aggressive apex predator that will hunt the largest of herbivores and the smaller carnivores, with the exception of the Carnotaurus in their own pack. Without break they are known to tackle and overwhelm prey in their numbers and induce fear into their enemies with their roar.

Appearance

Yutyrannus is a large carnivorous dinosaur that has a long head, a low ridge across its snout, and a pair of horns above its eyes. Its body is covered in thick downy feathers, excluding its hands, feet, and face, where it is more traditionally scaly in appearance. Unlike its larger relative, the Rex, it has long arms with three clawed fingers.

Variants

X-Yutyrannus

X-Yutyrannus is a tameable X variant of the Yutyrannus found in the Snow Biome on Genesis: Part 1. It is identical to the normal specie except for an icy robe. It has 5% ×  Melee Damage increase at the exchange of 3% ×  Health reduction. On official servers its level cap is 500.

Like all X-Creatures on Genesis: Part 1, wild X-Yutyrannus additionally have a 250% damage increase and a 60% damage reduction from players and tamed creatures.

Wild Stats Level-up

Type in values of a wild creature to see on which stats it's emphasized. Green values on a high-level creature are very good for breeding. If you have already tamed your creature you can try to recover the breeding stats with an external tool.[1]

Yutyrannus

The stat-calculator does not work in the mobile-view, see here for alternatives: Apps

Note that after the creature is tamed it gets bonuses on some stats depending on the taming effectiveness. This makes it hard to retrieve the levels on a tamed creature, so this tool is only for wild ones, but gives a first impression, how well the stats are distributed.

Abilities

Active

Bite
LeftRTR2ZR
  • The Yutyrannus bites the target for 55 damage.
  • Can be used every 0.67s by both a rider and the AI.

Fear Roar
RightLTL2ZL
  • The Yutyrannus roars at the targets.
  • This roars gives  Fear debuff to the targets, reducing their damage resistance and  Melee Damage by 50%, the duration depends of the fear percentage of the creature.
  • If the fear percentage reach 100% the creature gets  Terror debuff, making the same effects as  Fear but also making the creature losing the control and starts running around randomly, and the creature's rider unable to control its mount, all for 20 seconds.

Courage Roar
  • The Yutyrannus roars at the allies.
  • This roars gives  Courage buff to the allies, increasing their damage resistance by 20% and thier  Melee Damage by 25%, the duration depends of the courage percentage of the creature.
  • If the Yutyrannus roars on wild  Carnotaurus two times, up to 3 Carnos at the time they will starts following the Yutyrannus attacking its target and respecting the rider's orders during 60 seconds.

Passive

Freeze Immunity

Apparently the Yutyrannus is immune of being completely  Freeze of creatures like  Managarmr,  Ice Titan or  Fenrir.

Combat

General

Never engage the Yutyrannus head on. Its roar will cause all dinos, (except for  Giganotosaurus,  Rex,  Spino,  Wyvern,  Brontosaurus,  Rock Elemental, Alpha Creatures, Bosses, water creatures, or any dinos nearby a  Mammoth with a survivor drumming buffs at rear seat of the saddle) tamed or untamed, to run away from it, even if being ridden. Player movement speed needs to be at least 181% to outrun it.

Buffed Carnotaurus is a signal of the presence of Yutyrannus, which can be easily seen from afar.

Strategy

Ranged weapons

Use a fast mount that can outrun the Yutyrannus. Get the Yutyrannus at the bottom of a steep cliff, get on top of the outcropping, and start shooting.

A Tapejara or a Quetzal can be a more versatile alternative to the cliff strategy if there are no cliffs, or the Yutyrannus starts moving.

Lure the Yutyrannus into water. Using a flyer works best, just quickly attack it and go land on a nearby iceberg to where it is forced to swim and can't climb up. Be wary that the Yutyrannus may still be able to hit you, and knock you off the iceberg into the water where you can't get back up.

Flier

If you have a high damage Argentavis, you can fly towards the Yuty to get it to roar, then fly above it to avoid the AoE of the roar. You can kill it without your mount being scared, just watch out for if it starts to roar again.

Weaponry

Any long distance weapon.

Dangers

The Roar ability will call wild Carnos to fight for the Yutyrannus as well as scare your dinos into an uncontrollable retreat. Also, many dinos will be near the Yutyrannus such as dire wolves, Carnos, etc. Bring protection dinos to keep it and you alive from these outside threats.

Weakness

High Ground. If your mount is too high for the Yutyrannus, you will be out of range of its roar.

Taming

For general info about domesticating a wild creature see Taming.

KO Strategy

Cliffs

Use a fast mount that can outrun the Yutyrannus to a steep cliff, get on top, and start shooting with your preferred Tranq.

Fliers

Use a Tapejara or a Quetzal to be high above the Yutyrannus and shoot it with your preferred tranq. Land to regain stamina sooner than you normally would - if its fear roar hits you while you are low on stamina your bird will sprint until it's exhausted, potentially forcing you to land in an unsafe location.

Bronto strategy

One way to tame one is to stand on a  Brontosaurus(make sure to set it on passive and you can usually ignore the carnos) with a fast mount prefferably a  Baryonyx or  Thylacoleo. Shoot the Yuty from the back of the Bronto, then when it starts running set the bronto to neutral (so the carnos don't kill it while you tame the Yutyrannus) and run down the Yuty (it will not fear-roar when running) with your bary or thyla (these are the most recommended mounts because you will probably be constantly under attack by wolves and daeodon, and you can shoot from their backs) and shoot the Yuty while riding the bary/thyla.

Cage

Build a cage out of stone foundations (e.g. 2x3) with stone doorframes as walls. Place ramps at one side so you can lure the Yutyrannus into the cage by using a flyer or simply by running. Then you can easily shoot it with Tranqs without putting yourself in danger. You should kill the Carnos surrounding the Yutyrannus first.

Warning

If you are near the north edge of the map, make sure that the Yutyrannus does not get into the ocean, as it will glitch into the small icebergs and become stuck. There is no way to get it back onto land without luring it all the way out of the snow biome and onto solid ground.

Utility

Roles

  • Troop support: The  Courage inducing roar (C, Right Stick, Right Stick) of Yutyrannus temporarily boosts the attack damage allied creatures inflict by 25%, and reduces incoming damage they take by 20% each. This can be very useful in massive battles or when fighting bosses.
  • Intimidation: The  Fear inducing roar (Rmb, LT, L2) of Yutyrannus also terrifies enemy creatures, even when mounted by a player. This leaves them weak to attack from other animals and players in the tribe. The affected creatures will receive a debuff increasing damage taken and reducing damage done by respectively up to 50% and 30%. At full fear, the terrified creature will flee and not respond to commands. Additionally, a roaring Yutyrannus is a terrifying sight, and may even scare off other survivors! Note: some wild direwolves in large packs (more than 5-6 animals) no longer become fearful, and have actually been seen hunting Yutyrannuses. Unknown if this is a bug.

The following creatures will become hostile instead of fleeing after hearing the Yutyrannus’ Fear Roar:

The following creatures ignore the Yutyrannus' Fear Roar, including all Alpha Creatures, all Brute Creatures, and all Bosses and their minions:

Note that any creatures within the radius of the drums of the  Mammoth with  Mammoth Saddle will ignore the Yutyrannus' Fear Roar as well.

  • Fertilizer Gathering: Once a wild creature has reached the full fear effect, it will not only flee but it will also defecate in the process. The player is then free to dismount and gather the  Feces. Inducing fear on a group of weak creatures such as  Dilophosaur can easily yield 5-10 feces. In addition, Yutyrannus in a kibble farm will produce more than enough Large Feces for dung beetles to convert into fertilizer.
  • Hunting: Almost the equal of a Rex by itself and having the ability to buff a pack and make wild  Carnotaurus' fight on your side by using the boosting roar on them makes the Yutyrannus one of the best hunters and most versatile mounts in the game. Also, the knock-back from the roar and bite attack makes it unable to be hit by small to mid-size creatures if deftly used.
  • Taunt: Corrupted Creatures from the Extinction DLC are taunted by the 'Fear' roar, causing them to aggro onto the Yutyrannus instead of running. Affected creatures are still debuffed to take increased damage and deal reduced damage. This can be useful while defending Element Node and Orbital Supply Drop, as the roar can be used to draw hostiles away from the objective. Be sure to have powerful tames defending the Yutyrannus, especially on the higher difficulties.
  • Transport: Like all the other massive creatures, Yutyrannus can carry a lot. (Level Weight, speed, stamina)
  • Battle Mount: With the same base Health and only slightly less Damage than a Rex, and a greater speed than an Allosaurus, the Yutyrannus's additional abilities may make it a superior mount for the leader of a large scale battle. However, keep an eye out for more powerful tames on the other side; remember that while its speed and supporting strengths may make it the best mount to lead your forces from, they don't necessarily make it the best choice for dueling with top-end tames, especially those on the list of creatures that ignore the Fear roar completely. This, combined with the Yutyrannus' slow attack speed, and the fact that both the Intimidation Roar and the Battle Cry only affect the area in front of the Yutyrannus, means that it is best to lead from the rear. (Level Health, melee damage, stamina)
  • War Mount: Yutyrannus itself does a decent amount of damage. However, a fight with other large carnivore dinosaur is best to prevent as they ignore the intimidation roar. Due to the lengthy attack animation that Yutyrannus has, it's not strange to lose a fight against a  Rex, or a  Spino.
  • Extraordinary Kibble Production: Although the Yutyrannus prefers extraordinary kibble itself, its eggs may be obtained passively and used for  Extraordinary Kibble production (just like  Deinonychus and  Magmasaur eggs). This can make Yutyrannus the only creature ever needed for kibbles since extraordinary kibble is effective for taming any kibble-tamed creature, though using extraordinary kibble on much lesser creatures can be very taxing. Do note that if you are going for a Yutyrannus egg farm, only low-level Yutyrannus are required.
  • Knockout Assistant: Due to the increased damage taken by creatures a Yutyrannus intimidates with its roar, said creatures can be knocked out faster and using less ammunition. Can also be used to stop a small or mid-size carnivore from fighting back while you apply torpor to it, allowing for unconventional KO methods such as clubbing out a Carnotaurus after luring it into a taming pen and scaring it with a Yutyrannus.

Notes/Trivia

For information pertaining specifically to the real-world Yutyrannus, see the relevant Wikipedia article.

  • Dino Dossier revealed on 04/10/2017.[2]
  • Yutyrannus Saevus roughly translates into "Savage Feathered Tyrant."
  • In spite of Yutyrannus's  Fear roar not affecting bosses or large creatures like Rexes and Brontos, it does work on wild or enemy Yutyrannus.
    • Certain large or powerful creatures that are not native to the same maps as Yutyrannus, such as the  Rock Drake,  Basilisk and  Reaper, can still be affected by the  Fear roar despite their fearsome appearance.
    • The fear roar also does not work on most aquatic creatures, but the  Courage roar will still affect allied aquatic creatures.
  • Might be a bug, if you knock any creatures unconscious while the creature is feared by your Yutyrannus, after you tame it, your new creature will attack your Yutyrannus all the time.
  • Contrary to popular belief, Yutyrannus's roar does NOT summon  Carnotaurus in the same manner that bosses summon minions. It is set in its spawner to spawn with a guaranteed pack of three Carnotaurus minions, with ONE of these Carnotaurus having a slight chance to be an  Alpha Carnotaurus instead of a normal one (this same "chance" method is how all alphas spawn). This is all evidenced in the Devkit itself.
  • The Carnotaurus pack are known to attack another Yutyrannus that's not its leader. However, hostile  Alpha Carnos cannot hurt a wild Yutyrannus while attacking it.
  • Yutyrannus is largest dinosaur that can fit in Dinosaur Gate at this time.
  • Yutyrannus can knock over trees much like the islands larger predators (i.e  Rexes,  Spinos, and  Giganotosaurus), but like the  Allosaurus it doesn't deal trample damage to small creatures.
  • Prior to the major patch update of ARK: Homestead, the kibble used to perfectly tame a Yutyrannus is considered by many to be a huge hassle due to the low drop rate of  Golden Hesperonis Egg. With the patch, however, other extraordinary eggs such as  Wyvern Egg,  Rock Drake Egg and even  Yutyrannus Egg can be used to produce its new preferred kibble.
  • Yutyrannus have 2 extra yellowish teeth on its upper jaw, it will be a lot easier to see while it's unconscious.
  • Tamed Yutyrannus will play its startle animation when its owner takes fall damage.
  • X-Yutyrannus have blue eyes, while regular Yutyrannus have yellow eyes.
  • Wild Yutyrannus have strange behavioral characteristics given that their differing target and damage traits than their Carnotaurus pack. Yutyrannus are apex predators, meaning that they target smaller non apex carnivores in the wild. Carnotaurus are non apex and do not. In the wild, Yutyrannus will attack every herbivore and the Carnotaurus can fight alongside them, but the Carnotaurus ignore the other carnivores that Yutyrannus attacks. Additionally, the Carnotaurus in one Yutyrannus' pack can fall prey to another apex predator including another Yutyrannus.
  • The  Yutyrannus Egg is a special egg and is used to make  Extraordinary Kibble.
  • According to the reveal trailer, it showed the Yutyrannus scaring a pack of Thylacoleos chasing a helpless Megaloceros, implying that it is actually more of a wild helpless creature defender than a merciless hunter, even though it eats normal and helpless Ovis in the wild.
  • There is an unused Yutyrannus Corrupted Dinotar in the game (sometimes unofficially named " Ghost Yuty", "Ectoplasmic Yuty" and "Eternal Yuty" bacause of its ghost-like appearance).
  • Yutyrannus have a tendency to get themselves killed when survivors try to tame them (i.e. Drowning or Running outside of the Extinction Barrier).

Lore

  • There was a reveal about the ARK Animated Series Yutyrannus having a Nerva army saddle variant, implying that the New Legion also managed to obtain a Yutyrannus during the events of the lore.
    • With a leader-like role in-game, the Yutyrannus could be the main mount of the New Legion's tribe leader: Gaius Marcellus Nerva.
