The Chalicotherium (CHA-lih-co-THE-ree-um), sometimes referred to as Chalico or Chali, is a medium sized, herbivorous mammal able to lob boulders that deal heavy damage to structures and other creatures. It was first added in  ARK: Survival Evolved on the 21st of October, 2016.

Basic Info

Dossier

This section is intended to be an exact copy of what the survivor Helena Walker, the author of the dossiers, has written. There may be some discrepancies between this text and the in-game creature.

Wild

Found in small numbers within the Island's colder regions, Chalicotherium obsidioequus is normally a peaceful herbivore that prefers to spend its days lazing about or playing with its family. It is very territorial, however, and the entire family, young and old, will turn against an encroaching creature at just the slightest provocation. A memorable scene to stumble upon is a group of Chalicotherium playing. One odd playtime activity for Chalicotherium is hurling large balls of snow or.. mud-rocks(?).. at each other. Smaller creatures in the area shy away from Chalicotherium during this exertion, for fear of being buried in snow or "gravel."

Domesticated

While many creatures are useful while attacking a fortress, Chalicotherium can be trained as mobile artillery. Its unique playtime habit becomes a rather devastating long-range assault tactic when it is given boulders to throw, rather than snowballs!

Behavior

Like the  Dire Bear and  Gigantopithecus, the Chalicotherium becomes hostile when approached. It throws balls of rocks, mud, and (presumably) feces that can poison the player, slow movement speed, and apply a brown effect around the edges of the screen. You can still dodge the balls, but they are pretty rapid fire. The creature seems to bear some rudimentary intelligence, not unlike an otter, as troops of them can be seen hurling snowballs at each other like some sort of war game - something that also proves handy against local predators like  Hyaenodon,  Direwolves and even  Daeodons. While most commonly found in cold, snowy regions, they are by far the most adaptable of the Arks’ large mammals, and can also handle warmer conditions; occasionally being found in jungles, grasslands, even on beaches and wastelands across all maps except for Scorched Earth and Aberration.

Appearance

Perhaps the oddest mammal on the island, the Chalicotherium is best described as a hybrid between a horse, a gorilla, a bear, as well as a zebra but does look akin to Ground Sloths too. Like a gorilla it walks on its knuckles, but whereas apes have hands, the Chalicotherium wields wicked claws. These claws are used for pulling leafy branches towards its mouth, but are deadly in combat. The skull form, tail and pattering lean more towards that of an equine species, while the body is nearly identical in shape to giant ground sloths such as Megatherium.

Color Scheme and Regions

This section displays the Chalicotherium's natural colors and regions. For demonstration, the regions below are colored red over an albino Chalicotherium. The colored squares shown underneath each region's description are the colors that the Chalicotherium will randomly spawn with to provide an overall range of its natural color scheme. Hover your cursor over a color to display its name and ID.

This information can be used to alter the Chalicotherium's regions by entering cheat SetTargetDinoColor <ColorRegion> <ColorID> in the cheat console. For instance, cheat SetTargetDinoColor 0 6 would color the Chalicotherium's "main body" magenta.

Wild Stats Level-up

Type in values of a wild creature to see on which stats it's emphasized. Green values on a high-level creature are very good for breeding. If you have already tamed your creature you can try to recover the breeding stats with an external tool.[1]

Chalicotherium

The stat-calculator does not work in the mobile-view, see here for alternatives: Apps

Note that after the creature is tamed it gets bonuses on some stats depending on the taming effectiveness. This makes it hard to retrieve the levels on a tamed creature, so this tool is only for wild ones, but gives a first impression, how well the stats are distributed.

Abilities

Active

  • The Chalicotherium throws a large rock in the direction of the camera for 100 damage.
  • This attacks can damage even stone structures.
  • Can be used every 2.25s by both a rider and the AI.

Mud Throw
Human Feces.png
Wild only
  • The Chalicotherium throws mud at the target for 10 damage.
  • Mud gives  Poop Hit debuff to the target, reducing its  Movement Speed and  Health gradually, also negates any healing effect from consumables, lasts for 10 seconds.
  • Can be used every 10s by both a rider and the AI.

Bite
  • The Chalicotherium bites the target for 32 damage.
  • This attack can be used while moving.
  • Can be used every 0.67s by both a rider and the AI.

Passive

Sit

The Chalicotherium has a Sit option on the radial menu where the Chalico sits on its position and gains  Chalico Sit Buff, reducing its  Food consumption by 50% and recovering its  Health by 2% per second up to 50%.

Turret Mode

The Chalicotherium has a turret mode, allowing its AI to stay in position and attack from the distance using its boulders.

Taming

The Chalicotherium is unable to be tamed through the standard tranquilize-and-feed methods, and must be tamed non-violently.

To feed it, place  Beer Jar on the last slot of your hotbar, then when approached press use (default E) to feed it. You cannot feed them all the food required for taming at one time, you must wait every couple of minutes until it is hungry again to feed it more until its taming meter is filled. For the least amount of difficulty, wear  Ghillie Armor and sneak up carefully behind it. Also, if you have it in a safe area, you can feed the first beer and then do something else for a while to give it time to accrue some hunger.

The Chalicotherium also accepts  Stimberries but the taming progress is incredibly slow and therefore this is not advised.

Note that the values are for optimal cases, always bring extra supplies!
For a level-dependent count of resources needed, try an external taming calculator.

Once tamed the Chalicotherium's diet is  Berries, like other herbivores.

Combat

This section describes how to fight against the Chalicotherium.

General

Strategy

The Chalicotherium is a powerful creature, but by hammering it quickly with a  Woolly Rhino or  Dimorphodon, it can be taken down before it has a chance to attack.

Weaponry

Because of its hard-hitting swipe attacks, melee weapons are not advised. Long range weapons are most effective here, though caution of player placement is recommended. Its rock/dirt throw can knock a player off most rocks, so a tall ledge and use of a Scope Attachment is a more effective strategy here. Tanking or fast-flying mounts are even more effective with the Chalicotherium.

Dangers

It will charge at the player, throwing dirt, rocks or even fecal matter if it is unable to catch up. This projectile slightly impairs your vision, slows you down, and poisons you, regardless of the direction of impact.

Weakness

Once tamed, the Chalicotherium’s range attack is a rock throw, this attack can’t cover its right side efficiently. A fast mount with a close turning circle is a good choice to attack him from his right flank.

Utility

  • The Chalicotherium can be used as a mobile  Catapult Turret and can throw rocks at enemies. You do not need to have ammunition, because it grabs them from the ground.

Roles

  • Siege Weapon: Chalicotherium is the only tamable creature aside from the  Rock Elemental and  Ferox that can lob boulders that deal heavy damage to structures and animals. Unlike the elemental however, the Chalicotherium has the advantage of being able to climb onto platform saddle mounts to use them as a siege tower; and its smaller size with higher speed allows it to maneuver or re-position quicker. While its accurate range is shorter than that of the  Catapult Turret, it doesn't need ammunition to reload. Can be placed on Turret Mode for automatic throws. (Level up Health, Stamina and Damage)
    • Base Defense: The Chalicotherium's rock throw does a lot of damage and knockback, if its combined with some turrets (Specially  Plant Species X) most of the enemy soakers will have difficulty getting close to the defenses of the base.
  • Damage: The Chalicotherium has good enough base stats to be a decent damage dealer creature, its rock throw attacks does 100 base damage, being along with the  Mosasaurus bite, the only attacks that do the same total damage as their  Melee Damage stat precentage (Without including additional status effects). (Level up Health and Damage)
    • Intimidation Resource: Due to its massive damage per rock its possible to have a good breeding line in order to easily do extreme amounts of damage per rock hit to then intimidate the enemy tribe. (Level up Health, Stamina and Damage)
    • Underdog Boss Fighter: Although the Chalicotherium is surpassed by many other creatures in this area due to better abilities and/or statistics, it is still an uncommon but decent option to deal against bosses. However, a good breeding line its almost mandatory in order to achieve that; Also bringing  Sweet Veggie Cake, high quality saddles and some supports like  Yutyrannus,  Daeodon and  Mammoth will help a lot. (Level up Health and Damage)
  • Gatherer: The Chalicotherium's left click swing goes in a wide arc and has a rapid attack speed, allowing it to gather berries and thatch rapidly. It can also gather wood, but far less effectively. Also the Chalicotherium has a C attack, which can be used while sprinting to collect berries while still on the run. (Level up Stamina, Weight and Speed)
    • Beer Resource Collector: Although it cannot produce  Beer Liquid on its own, ironically it is one of the best collectors of  Thatch and  Berries, resources necessary to make beer.
  • All-Purpose Mount: The Chalicotherium is a very versatile mount. It can sprint relatively fast for a herbivore. With its high  Health,  Melee Damage, and massive knockback on its attacks it can go toe to toe with most predators, even large ones like  Rex. It can easily amass large amounts of  Berries for yourself and for taming others. Finally, it allows its rider to use weapons while mounting, making easier to finish targets badly wounded before they can escape. (Level up Health, Stamina, Weight and Damage)
  • Cave Mount: The Chalicotherium has decent stats and is small enough to traverse most caves. Since most caves go from high to low, the Chalico's advantage of having the high ground is clear. It can throw boulders from a high point. You can also use ranged weapons on its back or grenades to aggro large groups of cave creatures. One Chalico boulder can ricochet off multiple surfaces and creatures to deal with astronomical damage if it is aimed and angled correctly. You can bottle up creatures with choke points and let the Chalico throw boulders. Even if creatures can get up close, Chalicos have a great knockback. (Level up Health, Stamina, and Damage)

Notes/Trivia

For information pertaining specifically to the real-world Chalicotherium, see the relevant Wikipedia article.

  • The Chalicotherium was first revealed by Drake on July 23, 2015 [2]
  • On Dododex, the phrase “hold my beer” originated from this creature due to its unusual taming mechanic.
  • The dossier was revealed by Jat on January 25, 2016 [3]
  • Despite looking like a cross between a horse and a gorilla, Chalicotherium is a close relative of horses and rhinoceroses.
  • Chalicotherium means "Pebble Beast" in Greek, referring to its oddly shaped teeth, which fall out when they reach adulthood.
  • Obsidioequus means "Siege Horse" in Latin, referring to its relation to horses and its catapult-like capabilities.
  • Chalicotherium can be knocked out in the game, but like other non-violent and passive tames the Chalicotherium can not be tamed when it is knocked out.
  • Curiously, the type of projectile that the wild Chalicotheriums throws depends of the terrain, if it is on the snow biome it will throw snowballs, if that's not the case it will throw mud.
  • Chalicotheriums were probably social animals that lived in herds, Ark's Chalicotherium can usually be seen in singles, pairs and very ocasionally, in groups of 3.
    • If a wild Chalicotherium throws mud/snowballs and hits another Chalico (wild or tamed), this last one will do a "provocation" animation, this interesting mechanic could be a reference to the social behavior of this creature that is also mentioned on its dossier.
  • Oddly, even though they are tamed with Beer, once tamed they will not consume it, even when force fed.
  • Despite launching projectiles similar to those of the  Catapult Turret, the Chalicotherium cannot knock creatures that got unconscious with artillery weapons using its boulders ( Titanosaur,  Rock Elemental,  Karkinos and  Astrocetus).
  • Once tamed, Chalicotherium loses its ability to throw mud/snowballs.
  • There seems to be a bug that prevents Chalicotherium from damaging stone structures with its boulders.
