The Archelon is one of the creatures in ARK: Survival Ascended. It is a large, herbivorous reptile known for its Cnidaria-killing abilities and its ability to produce
Archelon Algae, which is used for taming wild herbivores. Additionally, the Archelon's saddle can seat up to five riders and provide its passengers with
Oxygen, making it perfect for deep-sea exploration.
The Archelon is the fourth creature from the ARK Additions mod to be added to the game.

- Wild
Archelon Physicorum is a kinder denizen of the deep. With a massive and thick carapace, Archelon survives exclusively on a diet of Cnidaria. These giants are often found in a group with at least one additional specimen, deep in the Islands' waters. Most likely due to their diet, Archelon are immune to the effects of torpor and tranquilization. Luckily, taming the effects can be done by hand, and only requires a hefty amount of time, and biotoxin... ...lots and lots of biotoxin. Archelon appear to possess the ability to gain unprecendented amounts of strength when they consume their favorite prey. Once they devour the corpse of a Cnidaria, Archelon have shown an increased resistance to damage, and a tremendous increase in their own attacks.
- Domesticated
Once they've had their fill of biotoxin, Archelon show great promise as undersea mounts. While they maintain their additional perks consuming Cnidaria, Archelon also produce an amazing Algae that herbivorous creatures seem to LOVE! On top of all of this, Archelon can seat an additional 4 survivors atop their saddles while also providing oxygen! I would consider it foolish for a tribe to not have at least one Archelon available to them.

Passive
The Archelon is immune to Stuns and it does x10
Damage against
Cnidarias.
After the Archelon kills a Cnidaria it will receive
Jellyfish Killer buff, increasing its
Damage against targets by 250% and reduces the damage received by 25%. This buff lasts for 90 seconds.
The Archelon can also eat Bio Toxin and restores
Health with it, every piece of toxin restores ~3 of health.
Tamed Archelon will passively produce Archelon Algae over 2 hours on land or over an hour if it is swimming. The maximum algae produced depends on the
Food stat.
Passengers and Dive Saddle
The Archelon Saddle has 1 rider and 4 passenger seats. Any player near an Archelon with the saddle eqquiped will receive
Archelon Air Bubbles buff, which recharges the
Oxygen stat of the affected players.
Damage Reduction
The Archelon reduces all kind of damage by 50% that it receives on its shell.
Also the "vulnerable" parts of the Archelon's body reduces the incoming damage depending on the type of damage that it is receiving, and all those multipliers are stackable with the shell multiplier:

Combat
They have an enormous Health pool, making weaponry typically a waste of both time and resources. Additionally, if the survivor is not prepared, this can make Archelons can be somewhat dangerous. They are also immune to stuns and
Torpidity due to their immunity to
Cnidaria. However, they don't have high
Melee Damage, even with the Jellyfish Killer buff. When tamed, more caution must be taken, since a tamed Archelon can be compared to a
Diplodocus in the fact that up to four other survivors can ride upon it wielding Weapons such as
Crossbows and
Harpoon Launchers while underwater, and more higher power weaponry like
Assault Rifles on land, essentially becoming a Aquatic Tank. Its primary weakness is its low speed, particularly on land, so luring them to the shores will put them at a serious disadvantage. Their poor turning radius can also be utilized to a nimble survivor's advantage.
Taming
Preferred Food
For general information about domesticating a wild creature, see: Taming
The Archelon is unable to be tamed through the standard tranquilize-and-feed methods, and must be tamed non-violently. To feed it, place Bio Toxin or
Superior Kibble on the last slot of the hotbar, then use the E key. The Archelon is decently fast in the water, but on land it is incredibly slow. Archelons can spawn near the shores or deep in the depths. In the water, Archelons are susceptible to attacks from
Megalodons and
Mantas, so clearing out any threats before taming is a good idea. A semi-aquatic mount such as a
Baryonyx or ranged weaponry can prove useful for luring Archelons onto land for safer taming. The shell of an Archelon is able to be stood on, so a survivor can also stand on their shell for the duration of the tame while feeding them.
Utility
Roles
- Jellyfish Killer: - As well as being immune to
Cnidaria stings, the Archelon harvests additional
Bio Toxin from
Cnidaria and when an Archelon has killed a
Cnidaria, it receives a buff that allows it to deal more damage and harvest even more
Bio Toxin. (Level up Damage)
- Taming Aid Production: Tamed Archelon will passively produce
Archelon Algae. Alongside being a desired food for herbivores, it can be crafted into
Algae Sushi for recovering lost taming effectiveness. The production cap scales with the
Food stat and the production speed doubles if the Archelon is swimming. (Level up Food)
- Aquatic Tank: Even at low levels, the Archelon has an impressive
Health pool, and coupled with the damage reduction from both its Jellyfish Killer buff from killing
Cnidaria and a full imprint, it can resist quite a large amount of damage. However, it has a slow
Health recovery and it struggles to attack enemies behind it. As it does have passenger seats on its saddle, having other survivors using
Pikes and
Crossbows can help in counteracting this weakness. (Level up Health, Damage and Stamina)
- Taming Assistant: With its massive base
Health stat and its natural immunity against
Stuns, the Archelon is a good mount option if the intention is to tame
Electrophorus or
Tusoteuthis. It can also be used to distract the knockout sea tames such as
Megalodon or
Xiphactinus while the players shoot them tranqs. (Level up Health)
- PvP Tank: The Archelon receives less damage from most of the more common weapons used for defense purposes, in addition to that the Archelon's shell reduces all kind of damage by 50%, which in combination with its good
Health stat makes it a decent option to make this purpose. Also the players can add to the equation the damage resistance buff the the Archelon receives after killing a
Cnidaria, but because Cnidarias are not tameable this last option its situational. (Level up Health)
- Taming Assistant: With its massive base
- Aquatic Cargo Hold: The Archelon has a large amount of
Weight, allowing it to act as an oceanic cargo hold (Level up a bit of Health and Stamina, then put the rest into Weight).
- Aquatic Transport: The Archelon possesses a four person saddle, allowing it to ferry riders around the ocean. Coupled with its abilities to ascend and descend straight up and down and its immunity to
Cnidaria stings, it makes for a helpful, if somewhat slow, transport unit. (Level up a bit of Health and Stamina)

Notes/Trivia
For information pertaining specifically to the real-world Archelon, see the relevant Wikipedia article.
- Archelon physicorum roughly translates to "physical ruling turtle."
- Archelon was secretly added in ASA through Patch 53.1 (not in the wild but through commands) without any announcements whatsoever before being added to the main game.
- Archelon's design and appearance is based off the "leatherback sea turtle".
- This is also probably a nod to the fact that leatherback was once thought to be its closest living relative, but now, Protostegidae (the family that Archelon is a part of) is thought to be a completely separate lineage from any living sea turtle.
- Despite eating only
Bio Toxin and kibble for taming, the Archelon can eat berries after it has been tamed.
- Despite being a reptile, much like most other aquatic creatures, it does not possess an
Oxygen stat.
- Once born, babies must be fully submerged in water within 5 minutes lest they die. For the duration of infancy, they are mechanically identical to aquatic creatures and must not leave the water. Once mature, they can return to land and may be used as terrestrial creatures as desired.
