The Mammoth or Woolly Mammoth, is one of the Mammals in ARK: Survival Evolved. Mammoths are a large, relatively slow but powerful creature that live in the colder areas of the island. It is one of the only creatures that can effectively gather  Thatch, with the others being Doedicurus and Megaloceros.

Wild

Seeing the likes of Mammuthus steincaput alongside dinosaurs is still strange. This behemoth towers over many creatures on the Island, and doesnt seem to fear anything but the Tyrannosaurus. I've seen them stomp would-be predators out of their way. Mammoths can grab and throw things with their powerful trunks, and manage a fearsome trumpeting roar with them as well. At first, I wondered how herds of Mammoths were able to find enough plant life to graze on. But then I saw them sweeping up thatch and foliage with their tusks, and stomping branches out of trees. Mammoths generally thrive in colder areas and have a herd mentality. They must spend much of their time travelling between the mountains' cold summit and more lush base. And maybe their herds are why the summits are so barren.

Domesticated

Mammuthus steincaput is a difficult beast to domesticate. Not because they are inherently stubborn, but because knocking one out to begin the taming process takes great effort. Once tamed, however, Mammoths are one of the only creatures on the island that can uproot trees without shattering them, and their trunks are strong enough to lift and carry survivors and other smaller creatures. Lately, survivors have been saddling up their mammoths to ride in tandem. The more clever riders have even been outfitting their mammoth saddles with war drums. It turns out that drum solos from mammothback can really boost your tribemates spirits.

Behavior

Mammoths are herd animals, meaning that if one gets attacked, any other nearby Mammoths come charging in and start attacking what attacked them. If you attacked one by accident and you don't want to fight just run a few meters, they will stop chasing you after just a few seconds. Despite their obvious size and power, they nonetheless frequently fall victim to the powerful carnivores that roam along side them; despite the dossier claiming that they fear nothing but Tyrannosaurus, their main predators seem to be Direwolves, Carnotaurus and Yutyranus.

Appearance

The Mammoth is a large, furry mammal that can be found wandering around the sides or bases of mountains. Out of its proud skull grows a kind of hair cap, like a crown. Its thick pelt is textured with thin, horizontal wave-like stripes. Like every other elephant and elephant-like species, it sports elephant-like feet, a short, stubby tail, and a long trunk for a nose. Its distinctive tusks grow a way similar to African elephants. But, unlike the still living elephant species and even the ones found in the fossil records, the tusks branch out near the base, with the second 'branches' clearly spirally turned upwards, with the pointed ends facing each other. There are also thorns on those segments along with a few thorns under the branching area. In addition, the mouth has smaller, upward-facing tusks.

This section displays the Mammoth's natural colors and regions. For demonstration, the regions below are colored red over an albino Mammoth. The colored squares shown underneath each region's description are the colors that the Mammoth will randomly spawn with to provide an overall range of its natural color scheme. Hover your cursor over a color to display its name and ID.

This information can be used to alter the Mammoth's regions by entering cheat SetTargetDinoColor <ColorRegion> <ColorID> in the cheat console. For instance, cheat SetTargetDinoColor 0 6 would color the Mammoth's "main body" magenta.

Wild Stats Level-up

Type in values of a wild creature to see on which stats it's emphasized. Green values on a high-level creature are very good for breeding. If you have already tamed your creature you can try to recover the breeding stats with an external tool.[1]

Mammoth

The stat-calculator does not work in the mobile-view, see here for alternatives: Apps

Note that after the creature is tamed it gets bonuses on some stats depending on the taming effectiveness. This makes it hard to retrieve the levels on a tamed creature, so this tool is only for wild ones, but gives a first impression, how well the stats are distributed.

Abilities

Active

Swing
LeftRTR2ZR
  • The Mammoth attacks the target for 48 damage.
  • This attacks are good for farming  Thatch and  Berries.
  • This attacks does different animations depending of the camera direction:
    • Front: The Mammoth attacks swinging its tusks to the front (Quicker animation, duration of 0.42s).
    • Side: The Mammoth attacks swingning its tusk side to side (Slower animation, duration of 0.89s).

Grab
RightLTL2ZL
  • The Mammoth grab a medium size creature with its trunk.
  • If it is already carrying a creature it will launch it on the camera direction.
  • Can be used every 0.69s by both a rider and the AI.

Intimidate
  • The Mammoth bars and  Intimidates the targets for 15 seconds.
  • The intimidation effect reduces the  Melee Damage of the target by 25% and negates the effect of  Bola and  Net Projectile that any intimidated player uses.
  • If Mammoth is standing in water or has previously stepped into a body of water this action will hydratate the rider and passenger, also it will remove any  Enflame effect.
  • Can be used every 3.28s by both a rider and the AI.

Stomp
  • The Mammoth stomps the target for 69 damage.
  • This attacks are good for farming  Wood.
  • Can be used every 1.26s by both a rider and the AI.

Passive

Drum

The  Mammoth Saddle has a special passenger sit where the passenger can play music with the drum by playing a minigame, if the minigame is played well every three good rounds the drum will give  Ready for War buff to the allied players and its mounts (This buff doesnt affect allied creatures without a rider) that gives an extremely amount of  Stamina, makes them immune to  Fear effect of the  Yutyrannus roars and from being dismounted by  Net Projectile,  Shadowmane,  Voidwyrm and  Plant Species Z Fruit.

Combat

This section describes how to fight against the Mammoth.

General

The Mammoth is extremely slow, the easiest way to gain its precious pelt is using a Metal Hatchet. Its knockback effect can be extremely dangerous (be careful while attacking them near a cliff). It is passive unless provoked.

Strategy

Start attacking from the back or you can use a crossbow and run away. Engaging in melee attacks can be extremely dangerous. If you have a high level sabertooth or other creature, use it to tank damage while you shoot at it from afar. When attacking one mammoth, other mammoths will run after you too, but they stop after a few seconds.

Weaponry

To kill a mammoth, you should use metal weapons and guns. Those would be the easiest ways to kill it.

Dangers

Getting seriously hurt, strong knockback and being overwhelmed from herd (rare), running into more aggressive predators.

Weakness

The mammoth is quite slow, which means that you can easily stay a few paces in front of it, and pelt it with bullets.

Taming

For general info about domesticating a wild creature see Taming

The Mammoth is tamed violently, i.e. it must be knocked out and fed with food it likes.

KO Strategy

Kite it like anything else, they're relatively slow. Use caution when taming a Mammoth as the location in which they spawn (the snow biome) is usually littered with animals that want to kill you and the low temperatures will slowly drain your life, if unable to protect yourself against the weather, you might want to try and kite them out of the snow biome into the warmer jungle. If you have a quetzal, use it to your advantage by carrying it to somewhere safe or a pen.

Utility

Controls

While the Mammoth doesn't have complicated controls, it does have a more unique skill set than what you'd find with the average tame, with each move performing a specific function. Its standard attack (defaultLeft, RT, R2), while not as damaging as its stomp attack (default Space, A, Cross), can be aimed more precisely and has a higher rate of attack speed when facing directly forward; allowing its tusks to potentially outpace the long-term damage output of the stomps. For the purpose of gathering, the primary tusk attack is used for gathering  Thatch, while the stomp attack is more useful for gathering  Wood. The crouch button (default C, Right Stick, Right Stick) triggers the Mammoth's bellow ability; applying the  Intimidated debuff against nearby enemies. If the Mammoth recently stepped in water, using this ability also causes it to spray water with its trunk, which can cancel the burning effects of various fire breaths on itself and close allies. Lastly, the secondary attack button (defaultRight, LT, L2) triggers the Mammoth's trunk grab ability, which allows it to pick up and carry various smaller targets. Pressing this button a second time will cause the Mammoth to release and throw the carried player or creature in the direction the targeting reticle is facing. While being carried by the trunk, enemy targets can be gored by the tusks or crushed with the stomp attacks.

Carrying

The following creatures can be carried by a Mammoth.

Roles

  • Combat Specialist: When bred with intention, Mammoths are peers to any creature used in endgame content. Like the  Rex, they are a blunt instrument; success may increase by having other specialized tames beside them, but the Mammoth will always hold worth in any group of armed forces.
    • Damage Dealer: While a Rex or  Spino might be bigger and scarier, Mammoths should not be underestimated. Their tusks may do less damage than a Rex's bite, but they gore much more quickly than the reptile's jaw can flap; allowing a Mammoth with the command of a rider to outpace a Rex's damage over a prolonged battle. Their stomp attack is even more damaging, even more so than a Rex's bite, but only partially, and it's a bit slower; making it the ideal attack for short-term battles and weaker opponents. Their ability to grab smaller targets with their trunks also comes in handy; allowing a Mammoth to lock an opponent in an iron grip, and either gore the victim to death or throw them away at leisure. Lastly, one more advantage they have over most of their slightly larger rivals; the Mammoth is far more maneuverable and easier to reposition in a tight pinch, having a far smaller turning Radius than a Rex.
    • Boss Support: The  Intimidate debuff allows the Mammoth to be a good support on bosses battles since this debuff also affect them, this is specially good for bosses with a lot of damage like  Dinopithecus King or  Dragon, on the previous mencioned the Mammoth also has the advantage of being herbivore, which means that both explosions and fire attacks does less damage to the Mammoth, this in combination with some  Sweet Vegetable Cake to prolong its survival they make it an ideal creature for these confrontations. However, take in consideration that although its attacks do a lot of damage per hit, its total DPS is less than other common boss creatures, so its recommended to have just a couple of Mammoths on  Mate Boost to have the intimidation effect and leaving the damage to other creatures more consistent in that area like  Rexes or  Therizinosaurus.
    • Support Tank: Even better than their ability to punish opponents with brute force is their ability to withstand punishment in turn. Mammoths have several things going for them as tanks, not the least of which is their status as an Herbivore. Due to their flat teeth and love of plants, unlike the many Carnivores they'll go into battle with, Mammoths have access to something their meat-loving rivals do not:  Sweet Vegetable Cake. The cake, when placed in the Mammoth's inventory, will automatically be consumed whenever the Mammoth's Health drops below 85% of its maximum, and over 30 seconds will restore 10% of the Mammoth's health over the duration (up to a maximum of 2,100 hp). Their access to a healing food item isn't their only advantage, however, as Mammoth's have another trick up their sleeve: their trunk bellow. Whenever a Mammoth throws up its trunk and 'roars', it applies a debuff against hostiles in a wide radius called  Intimidated. The Intimidated debuff reduces all  Damage the target deals over a 15 second duration by 25% and negates the effect of  Bola and  Net Projectile that the intimidated players uses, it can be continuously refreshed as long as the Mammoth keeps using its trunk roar ability. Finally, as an added treat, if the Mammoth is in, or has recently stepped in water, it's trunk roar ability sprays water like a hose; enabling it to cancel any burning effects from various fire breaths placed on itself and close-quarters allies.
    • Siege Engine: Whether as a Tank or a Damage Dealer, the Mammoth has several factors working in its advantage as your ally during a raid on an enemy base. The primary benefit it brings to the table, besides those previously explored in prior roles, is the war drum on its saddle. When manned by a rider who keeps the drums beating, the Mammoth provides the  Ready for War buff to nearby allies in a wide radius. Ready for War grants  Stamina regeneration to its recipient, and most useful of all: complete immunity to the  Fear roar of enemy  Yutyrannus and being dismounted by  Net Projectile,  Plant Species Z Fruit,  Shadowmane and  Voidwyrm. With an experienced drummer on the saddle, the Mammoth serves as the glue that helps hold the bulk of your smaller forces together, keeping them in line and preventing them from bolting as the Yutyrannus come marching in. Likewise of benefit to your smaller party members, the Mammoth's trunk grab ability can be used to throw allied players and tames up onto the battlements or over the walls before the gates come crashing down.
  • Timber Jack: While capable of gathering most of the standard resources that other Herbivores can harvest (such as  Berries and  Seeds), though incapable of gathering Fiber, the Mammoth particularly excels in harvesting  Thatch and  Wood. Now considered one of the best, if not the best, tree cutter in ARK, the Mammoth can easily fill up on a load of Thatch and Wood in a thick forest and haul the cargo back to base. Unlike most gatherers, however, the Mammoth has a choice in which resource it harvests from the trees; with its tusk attacks scraping mass quantities of Thatch, and its stomp attack raking in the Wood. The benefits don't stop at the gathering though, as the Mammoth possesses a 75% Weight reduction on all Wood placed in its inventory.
  • Herding Animal: With its trunk capable of grabbing, holding, and throwing certain smaller targets, the Mammoth makes an excellent choice for man-handling various creatures that need to be sorted. Whether it's managing your current beasts, or dragging a new one back home for taming, the Mammoth makes a sturdy option for collecting and organizing an unruly bunch of critters from pen to pasture.
  • Transport: Whether hauling cargo or passengers, the Mammoth may not be a speedy option compared to some, but what it lacks in speed it definitely makes up for in brawn. Though not a large enough class of creature to avoid being hounded by smaller threats like Raptors or Direwolves, which will constantly harass the Mammoth as it travels, despite the attention it attracts; a well-leveled and well-rounded Mammoth will have little problem in crushing any challengers in its path, and ensuring its load arrives at its destination, safe and secure. For this role, keep in mind that the Mammoth can only hold one extra passenger than the rider. Carrying a third player with the trunk is not advised, as they will be directly in harms way when threats inevitably target the Mammoth. Transporting small, but sturdy creatures with the trunk instead is a better option.
  • Primitive Plus Utility: Specific to Primitive Plus, Mammoths drop  Fresh Fat when killed, which can be burned to make  Organic Oil.

Notes/Trivia

For information pertaining specifically to the real-world Mammoth, see the relevant Wikipedia article.

  • "Steincaput", which is a fictional species of the Mammuthus genus, seems to be a compound term composed of the German word Stein, meaning “stone”, and the Latin word caput, meaning “head”. “Stone head” could be a reference to the species' apparent stubbornness or a reference to their tough skulls. Besides this, "stein" might be a slight nod to the similarity between the heads of the Mammoth and Frankenstein's monster.
  • Mammoths require a Behemoth Gateway. They can walk through a gap three foundations wide, but two is too narrow.
  • Real world Mammoths had only two tusks. Mammoths in the game are, however, a different species and have four tusks in total, and the reason for that adaptation is unknown.
    • The number of tusks may be a reference to the Oliphants in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, with a similar ornate and spiky style.
  • Real Mammoths much like Elephants are social animals that live in herds, however Ark's Mammoths can be found together occasionally but are mostly seen traveling alone.
  • Despite the dossier stating it only fears  Rex it can be intimidated by the  Yutyrannus, and it can intimidate  Rex as well.
  • Despite the dossier stating that it is difficult to tame a Mammoth, it's relatively easy actually. The only difficulty is that there are a great deal of predators in the tundra which makes trapping them incredibly helpful.  Kibble will help greatly.
  • The Mammoth in ARK is larger than the real life counterpart, able to look  Tyrannosaurus and  Spinosaurus in the eye. It may be closer in size to the Columbian or Steppe Mammoths, both of which may have dwarfed Tyrannosaurus in size.
  • Real Mammoths lived in more open areas like grasslands as opposed to thick forests where moving around would have been difficult. They also did not live in snow all year round of course.
  • Mammoths now also gather Thatch effectively due to TLC 3. Gathering of Berries remains unchanged.
  • Interestingly, Wild Mammoths can Intimidate each other.
  • If planning to use the Mammoth to gather Rare Mushrooms in the Swamp take note it tends to be juggled around by  Sarcosuchus and  Kaprosuchus among other predators thus being stunlocked due to being constantly airborne.
  • The Mammoth's ability to apply  Ready for War and  Intimidated affects with the sound of its trumpet roar is similar to how the  Yutyrannus is capable of applying affects with its roar.

Lore

  • The Mammoth dossier was written during the beginning of Helena's in-lore events in her Island explorer note #4 when she mentioned that she was finishing up on it until a Rex suddenly appeared and attacked the Mammoth herd she was studying.
