The Canteen is one of the Tools in ARK: Survival Evolved. It is unlocked at Level 54 for 24 Engram Points.

Holding a hefty 300 units of  Water, the Canteen is one of the best items for long journeys away from home. While not as light as the  Waterskin, it is still much lighter than the  Water Jar at only 2 units of  Weight, making carrying multiple Canteens around fairly easy.

The Canteen is superseded by the  Tek Canteen.

Notes

  •  Gachas will eat Canteens placed in a  Feeding Trough. Because it provides little nutrition, it will be the first item eaten and will probably dissapear very quickly.
  • On Scorched Earth, the Canteen, like all water containers, will slowly lose water over time.
  • Due to a bug, the Canteen couldn't be refilled in a tap before v192.0.[1] Currently (2019-08-10), this bug is happening again.
  • Due to a bug, it is possible to have a broken Canteen, which will not be repairable and cannot be filled with water. This bug occurs when putting a Canteen in a Tap. You can tell whether this bug is present by drinking from the Tap first. If the Tap doesn't fill your water, don't put any water containers in it as it will break them.
  • In Primitive Plus 1.5, the Canteen's Engram cannot be learned.
  • To drink from the Canteen, highlight it in your inventory and select Use Item, or put it on your hotbar and press the designated key. Players can drink from a filled Canteen three times before it needs to be refilled.
  • To refill the Canteen, use it while standing in the rain or while standing in shallow water. You can also fill it by placing it in the inventory of a  Stone Irrigation Pipe - Tap or  Metal Irrigation Pipe - Tap.
  • Cheat command "AddEquipmentDurability <amount>" can be used to add water to a Canteen in the hotbar.
  • The Canteen is one of the cheapest items that is crafted in the  Fabricator.
  • Putting a filled Canteen into a  Refrigerator or a  Tek Trough will give you an  Iced Canteen after 60 seconds. Drinking from an Iced Canteen increases your hyperthermal insulation by 84 and decreases your hypothermal insulation by the same amount, which makes it easier to survive in hot places like the Lava Cave or on Scorched Earth. Once removed from the Refrigerator, the Iced Canteen will "spoil" into a normal Canteen after 10 minutes. However, leaving it in the Refrigerator will extend the spoil time to what equates to almost 3 real-life years. Iced Canteens also help to remove Heatstroke.
  • If you stand in the refill zone of a river and drink from an Iced Canteen several times, the buff gained will stack. While this can be useful on Scorched Earth, on other maps (especially in colder areas and depending on your character's Fortitude) it will cause you to lose  Health because of  Hypothermia.

Trivia

  • The Canteen's item icon is modeled after the US Military’s standard issue canteen and A.L.I.C.E. LC-2 canteen cover.
