Overview

The Gene Scanner is a tool included in the Bob's Tall Tales DLC, and is unlocked at level 86. It was released alongside Aberration and was introduced in the Steampunk Ascent DLC. It has a variety of uses, including:

  • Extracting or Implanting Traits to tamed creatures
  • Extracting embryos from pregnant creatures
  • Scanning the Ark for wild creatures.
  • Accessing the  Gene Storage

Usage

Looking at a creature while holding the Gene Scanner will add information to the HUD, including the creature's level, name, and any traits it has.

If the player presses the alternate attack button (default Rmb, LT, L2, ZL) the Gene Scanner will behave similarly to a  Spyglass and zoom in.

By pressing H, the player can get more information on a dino's traits, though the popup menu blocks most of the player's FOV.

The Gene Scanner is the only way to access the gene storage and transfer traits to and from it.

Traits

Traits can be extracted from tamed creatures by hitting (default Lmb, RT, R2, RB) them with the Gene Scanner, which will bring up a menu from which the player can transfer traits between the dino and the scanner's own storage. The traits can then be stored on a  Gene Storage or on the same Gene Scanner that was used for the extraction, though the scanner can only hold 10 traits at a time.

Traits cannot be transferred to an adult tame, including ones extracted from that creature, unless it has a Fast Learner trait. The tranferred trait will replace and remove the Fast Learner trait on the adult. You will not get the Fast Learner trait back, nor is there confirmation before it is transferred. Any creature that has not reached full maturity is able to freely transfer traits. Each creature can have up to 5 traits, with some traits allowed to stack 2 or 3 times.

Embryo Extraction

The Gene Scanner can also be used to extract embryos from pregnant creatures, which causes the embryo to function similarly to an  Egg. To extract an embryo, hit the creature with the scanner, then select the extraction option from the popup menu. This will add the embryo to your inventory. It can then be incubated by adding it to the  Embryo Incubator.

Scanning

By holding R, the player can access the scanner menu, wherein they can track wild creatures. The max level the scanned creature can be is scaled proportionally with the level of the player. (i.e. lvl 103 dinos at player level 83). Once scanning, arrows will appear on either side of the scanner to guide the player to the wild creature.

Notes/Trivia

  • Players can see the traits on all creatures, including those tamed by other tribes
  • Similarly to the Spyglass, the Gene Scanner can be used while riding a creature, including those that don't allow items to be used while mounted.
  • Though they cannot be tracked, creatures unavailable on the map still show up in the scanning menu. (i.e. argentavis on aberration)
