The Orbital Supply Drop, commonly abbreviated as OSD, is a temporary structure and loot drop that is currently exclusive to the Extinction DLC. It replaces the Supply Crates and Deep Sea Loot Crates of the previous maps. Different than the former loot drops, they can and will be damaged by waves of Corrupted Creatures spawning around the Supply Drop. To secure the valuable contents of the Orbital Supply Drop, the survivor must fight off waves of corrupted enemies, the amount of which varies depending on the level of the drop.

Overview

The Orbital Supply Drops occasionally fall from the sky and land in various areas in the Wasteland outside the city on Extinction. There are 4 different types of OSDs, each one varying in difficulty, health, and potential rewards.

An OSD defense mission is initiated by simply approaching it, which will cause a force-field to spawn around it, beginning the first wave. This force-field will protect the OSD from the waves of corrupted creatures, but will shrink as it absorbs damage. Once it is destroyed, it cannot be brought back, and the OSD will become susceptible to damage. Alternatively, the player can choose to prematurely deactivate the shield if they wish by walking up to the OSD and choosing the "deactivate shield" option. However, keep in mind that deactivating the shield is an irreversible option and it cannot be brought back once it has been turned off.

Once the defense mission has been initiated, the OSD can be approached at any point (or looked at with a Spyglass) to see its remaining health, what wave is currently active, how many waves until the defense mission is complete, and how many hostiles are remaining in the current wave. Once all the enemies in a wave are killed, the next wave will begin after a few seconds, signified by a musical cue.

Once all the waves are completed, a musical cue will play and the message "OSD defense complete!" will appear to all nearby players. At this point, the player may simply walk up to the OSD and select the new "Eject Items" option to receive their rewards. Keep in mind that the items are dispensed directly onto the floor, so be sure to pick everything up before they de-spawn. The OSD itself will disappear a few seconds after all of its items have been dispensed.

If the player fails an OSD defense mission, the OSD will be destroyed, disappearing in a similar fashion to the supply crates on the other maps and blasting back all nearby entities. This blast does not cause damage, but can potentially cause fall damage if you are blasted off a ledge. Additionally, if the OSD is allowed to enter stasis (all players leave the area), the defense mission will be terminated, causing the OSD and the wave of enemies to disappear. If you plan on doing an OSD defense mission solo, be sure to bring everything you need with you to the fight so this can be avoided.

Blue, Yellow, and Red OSDs require 6 waves to complete, consisting of a preliminary "wave 0", which itself only consists of between 3 and 5 Corrupted Creatures, followed by 5 normal waves. Purple OSDs (the hardest difficulty) require 8 waves (0-7) to complete, and have a longer "grace period" between waves to allow players to dismount and select the "End OSD defense" should they choose to do so. The players may choose to continue after wave 7 to increase the quantity of the loot. However, since loot is randomized on the start of each wave, eventually they'll reach the cap (149 slots) and will not continue to gain any new items.

Combat

Easy Drops

  • Easy Drops contain only small corrupted predators, and also at low levels. A rider with a single medium-high level  Enforcer is generally enough to defend this type of drops. These drops are indicated by the color blue

Normal Drops

  • Normal Drops will spawn more powerful corrupted creatures like Paracer, and at higher level - around 150. Arthropleura also deal massive reflect damage to Enforcers, so it is advised to use high-armor saddled, rider imprinted war mount to handle this type of drops. These drops are indicated by the color yellow.

Hard Drops

  • This type of drop will spawn corrupted creature at above lvl.200. It also spawn Enraged Triceratop which tremendously improves the combat ability of nearby other corrupted creature. Use your very strong army, and caution as well. These drops are indicated by the color red.

Legendary Drops

  • These rare drops are not to be underestimated for one second. Even the first wave is difficult. These drops are indicated by the color purple. A good strategy is to set up a personal  Tek Forcefield to provide another layer of defence.
  • Bring endgame level tames such as gigas, titans, meks, and if players have access to other dlcs, reapers, wyverns, rock elementals, magmasaurs, and astrocetus.
    • Gigas are the main damage dealers to close off routes to the orbital supply drop.
    • The Desert Titan, Meks, Rock Elementals, Magmasaurs, and Astrocetus are the artillery fire to whittle down corrupted creatures massive health pools before they arrive to the gigas.
    • Reapers, and velonasaurs will act as an anti-air unit against the corrupted wyverns.
    • The Forest Titan will be using its attacks to slow down and grab corrupted creatures.
    • The Ice Titan will be the mobile unit where it will be used to take out the Enraged Corrupted Rexes.
    • The Tek stryder can act as a support role during the defense where based on its attachments.
      • With the pulse and phase cannon, it can act as an artillery unit.
      • With any shield module and the silence cannon, it can help shield ally tames from Corrupted Wyverns and Corrupted Reaper King acid and be able to ground flyers to allow ground tames to quickly take them down before the wyverns can get back in the air.
  • Prioritize in killing the Corrupted Wyverns at the start of a wave as their speed and fire attacks can distract survivors and their tames long enough to allow the other the main Corrupted Creature horde to arrive amidst the chaos and overwhelm your tames.
  • Purple Legendary drops are very hard. Be prepared to bring some of your best tames. If your tribe plans on doing one, several tribe members can go going back and forth with healing tames such as snow owls and daeodons to heal the tribe that will be involved in the defense part as the corrupted creatures in this drop defense can deal over 200 damage on average.

Strategies

General
  • The  Carcharodontosaurus (or Carcha) is undoubtedly the best creature to use in an OSD as their Bloodrage and Killing Frenzy is extraordinarily powerful and while the Ice Titan does better in terms of raw damage, the Carcha more than makes up for it with extreme speed and super health regeneration when Bloodrage is at its max. A well bred and well leveled Carcha with a good saddle (ARMOR +80) can actually SOLO even a legendary OSD. Furthermore the Carcha is the only creature that can end high level OSDs at full Health points, having no need to recover from the encounter and being immediately available for the next OSD. However, be wary of Enraged Corrupted Rexes and don't fight them head on if there are more than one, let them go for the OSD instead and attacks them from behind.
  • A good strategy is to bring a flock of high-level flying creatures put on Aggressive, or Attack My Target behavior to fight off the Corrupted Creatures.
  • Alternatively, the  Enforcer deals 4 times damage to Corrupted Creatures and come in handy when defending the Supply Drop. A single high level Enforcer can easily do a blue drop. It's advised to bring stronger dinos to anything above.
  • A recommended other creature is the  Megatherium, that gets the 'Insect' Killer buff from killing  Araneo,  Arthropleura and  Pulmonoscorpius
  • If you do not have flying Creatures like the  Pteranodon, you are well advised to bring a collection of ranged weapons with you. All drops will contain flying Corrupted Creatures as part of waves regardless of difficulty.
  • For yellow drops, many Corrupted Arthropleura will attack in the later waves. It is advised to bring loads of spare armor.
  • To prevent being encumbered and fully loaded with items in your tamed creature's inventory, it is advised to set Harvesting to off, as the Corrupted Nodules, meat and other items fill up your inventory quickly.
  • Tek Forcefield from the drop will receive damage from any source, including you or your creature regardless of what kind of damage.
  • Surrounding the Forcefield with Creatures such as the Velonasaur to create a automatic ranged defense protecting the Forcefield as a whole.
  • A mek is highly suggested as it can have special modules and do high damage.
  • The absolute best creature for the Red or Purple drop is a ice titan. it does 10x damage or 60k+ with the ground pound attack to corrupted creatures. the only creature that can tank 2-4 hits is the enraged corrupted rex.
  • Using Giganotosaurus for red and above orbital supply drops are another great option because of their high damage, health and can be bred, allowing to have a steady supply of gigas for future supply drops.
  • Using dino leashes helps to keep needed tames in a certain area around the drop. They can be effective in closing off routes to the drop.
  • A good strategy is to use Spike Walls and Managarmrs. Place the Spiked Walls around the main OSD, a layer around the Shield, and if one has enough patience to demolish them all at the end, then one more ring around the outside. Use Managarmrs to jump over the Spike Walls and Ice Breath to kill any corrupted creatures that are stuck on the Spike Walls. Prioritize Spinos, Arthroplueras, Enraged Trike and Enraged Rex, and Rexes over Dilos, Raptors and Trikes, because Ice Breath will drain your stamina and smaller animals are easier to deal with than bigger animals that break the walls.
Singleplayer
  • Craft a group of  Enforcer
  • Let them follow you on a fast flyer, like  Snow Owl,  Pteranodon or  Tapejara, ideally with a  Tapejara Tek Saddle, have other flyers also following you
  • Have a flock of high-level Aggressive  Dimorphodon ready just in case
  • When you reach a Supply Drop, position the Enforcers in a circle around the drop, set them to Aggressive
  • Be careful when attempting Legendary drops this way, as Enforcers cannot benefit from saddles or imprinting and may quickly be destroyed by Enraged Corrupted Rexes swarming the drop.
  • If you manage to tame an ice titan, it can be used to defend a legendary drop to 7th to 11th wave alone, if used properly.
  • Another good strategy is to bring a flock of high-level  Argentavis, preferably around 10 of them, if you're doing a lower-level Orbital Supply Drop.
  • Well-bred, imprinted, and maxed mutated health kentros with lots of points pumped into health paired with dino leashes are great at defending choke points. Not only is their damage equal to a Theri when over 4 kentros are nearby, but their damage reflection can spike up to the thousands when corrupted creatures hit many of them at once. Even an Enraged Corrupted Rex can kill itself in several chomps if it hits a dense number of high-health kentros within its bite area. Pair with Carchars to weaken the corrupted creatures to make it able to quickly get its damage buff to the max. Pairing them with Gigas is dangerous as when its rage mechanic kicks in, it will kill itself when biting on too many kentros at once.

Preparations

  • In orbital supply drop locations, there are nearby locations of relative safety that spawn almost no corrupted creatures where you can park your mounts for travel and cargo. These locations can also double as camps.
    • These mounts can be stocked with cryopods of desired tames.
    • After an OSD, you can deposit all the loot into your cargo tame.
    • If in a big tribe, players can take turns doing OSDs while one travels back to base with the loot and sort it there.
Multiplayer
  • It's common on official servers to use high damage(700%+) imprinted Giganotosaurus with a good saddle 100 armor and above to solo red Orbital Supply Drops by walking circles around it. Be wary of your bite range, if you don't trust yourself, use a Managarmr or Snow Owl(also used for healing between waves) to kill the smaller Corrupted Creatures like Carnotaurus.
  • The Ice Titan can be used to do red and purple Orbital Supply Drops with its freeze breath attack.
  • Ensure that every defending tribe member and powerful Creatures on standby with healing items in the event that the Corrupted Creatures swarm the players and the Orbital Supply Drop.
  • At the end of the 5th wave, when all Corrupted Creatures are defeated, in PvP mode it is important to get to the Supply Drop first to secure its contents.

Dangers

  • Orbital Supply Drops take damage like Wood, but all  Corrupted Creatures can damage it regardless of what species. This also applies to the survivor when trying to kill said  Creatures with either tamed Creatures or even Weapons such as  Guns and  Swords. Keep allied, non-ridden Creatures away from the Orbital Supply Drop to prevent excess damage. Tamed Creatures will damage both the  Forcefield and Orbital Supply Drop so it is important to keep friendly aggressive  Creatures away from those structures. Orbital Supply Drops themselves do not take damage from tamed creatures in PvE, but their forcefields do.
  • The  Enraged Triceratops is the dangerous apex of  Triceratops. Not only do they boast high stats similar to  Alpha Creatures, they will also considerably boost the damage of the  Corrupted Creatures and reduce the damage taken (double damage output and reduce damage by half, respectively.) These must be a priority target before they get to the Orbital Supply Drop. Alphas boosting one another can be extremely dangerous so it's important to keep them separated, if possible.
  •  Enraged Corrupted Rex is essentially a more powerful  Corrupted Rex. Since they buff the  Corrupted Creatures, consider these as another priority.
    • With the Enraged Corrupted Rex having over 100k health at levels 400-525, this makes them even more dangerous in taking down. Being mated boosted and have a buff from another Enraged Corrupted Rex, an Enraged Corrupted Rex can deal around 2k damage per bite to unarmored targets.
  • Structures, including those built on platform saddles, can be destroyed upon a successful defense. Be sure to move all dinos with platform saddles away from the drop to avoid destruction of your structures.
  • Yellow Supply Drops tend to spawn many Corrupted Arthropluera, which have a passive percentage-based damage-reflection ability. It would be advised to use ranged attacks to clear these out, as their damage-reflection is deadly when dealing with them in large numbers. Even an imprinted Giganotosaurus could potentially be at threat of entering rage mode if they are allowed to carelessly bite through large swarms of corrupted Arthropluera.
  • Ensure you and your tribe, as well as any tamed Creatures are no where near the Orbital Supply Drop upon it's landing. It will kill anything in it's path upon impact with the ground.

Bugs

  • Due to the terrible path finding AI, corrupted creatures often get stuck on the terrain before they can reach the OSD. This can be very problematic in Single Player mode because the OSD despawns if the player goes too far away from it. Depending on the OSD location, it can slow down the defense completion drastically and in the worst cases it can make the completion impossible.

Notes

  • Dino levels get higher based on the difficulty of the drop. Blue drops typically have levels between 1-30, yellow have 100-180, red have 200-300, and purple can have levels 400-800
  • If you have the PvE setting enabled Corrupted Creatures can not destroy a Tek Forcefield if you put one up. This makes the drop almost invincible but sometimes creatures can sneak through and damage the drop.
  • Tek blueprints can be acquired in OSDs; this is the only way to get quality Tek equipment, or to acquire Tek engrams via blueprints without the need to kill bosses.
    • Tek blueprints, unlike all other blueprints, have a limited number of times they can be crafted, which can be seen by moving the cursor over them with tooltips toggled on.
  • An OSD at the nearest spawn position can be summoned with cheat StartNearestHorde Crate <1-4> (1= Easy/Blue, 2= Medium/Yellow, 3= Hard/Red, 4= Legendary/Purple)
  • Orbital Supply Drops can not be damaged by the Managarmr's Frost Breath attack or the breath from Lightning Wyverns and Poison Wyverns. Fire Wyverns CAN damage the pod with their fire breath (this is likely due to the fact that Corrupted Wyverns are Fire Wyverns).
  • At the moment of ejecting the loot, be aware that every structure near the OSD will be instantly demolished, this includes Tek shield generators or foundations.
  • As of v288.113, when PvE is activated only the tribe that "claims" the drop can deactivate the forcefield and eject the contents once it is successfully defended.
  • As the ejected items are dropped onto the floor instead of bags, their despawn timer immediate starts as soon as they are expelled. Due to how heavy some of the items can be, it is common for players to sometimes fail to grab all of the loot in time. To prevent this, it is recommended to bring a whip to grab all the items quickly, as well as a high-weight creature such as a Gasbags or an Argentavis in a cryopod, and deploy them once the OSD defense is complete.
  • In the explorer notes, Santiago built the orbital supply drops to store the ludicrous amounts of element they have gathered in the Wasteland. He also added shielding that is built to protect the unit from being damaged and did it because of the "Rockwell Incident".
    • In explorer note The One Who Waits #24, the One Who Waits has been dropping the orbital supply drops for survivors to potentially claim mek blueprints but the corrupted sense them falling and rally in an attempt to destroy it, explaining why corrupted creatures attack in waves when survivors defend the drop.
