Mammoths are herd animals, meaning that if one gets attacked, any other nearby Mammoths come charging in and start attacking what attacked them.
If you attacked one by accident and you don't want to fight just run a few meters, they will stop chasing you after just a few seconds.
外観
The Mammoth is a large, furry mammal that can be found wandering around the sides or bases of mountains. Out of its proud skull grows a kind of hair cap, like a crown. Its thick pelt is textured with thin, horizontal wave-like stripes. Like every other elephant and elephant-like species, it sports elephant-like feet, a short, stubby tail, and a long trunk for a nose. Its distinctive tusks grow a way similar to African elephants. But, unlike the still living elephant species and even the ones found in the fossil records, the tusks branch out near the base, with the second 'branches' clearly spirally turned upwards, with the pointed ends facing each other. There are also thorns on those segments along with a few thorns under the branching area. In addition, the mouth has smaller, upward-facing tusks.
This section describes how to fight against the Mammoth.
全般
The Mammoth is extremely slow, the easiest way to gain its precious pelt is using a Metal Hatchet. Its knockback effect can be extremely dangerous (be careful while attacking them near a cliff). It is passive unless provoked.
戦略
Start attacking from the back or you can use a crossbow and run away. Engaging in melee attacks can be extremely dangerous. If you have a high level sabertooth or other creature, use it to tank damage while you shoot at it from afar. When attacking one mammoth, other mammoths will run after you too, but they stop after a few seconds.
武器
To kill a mammoth, you should use metal weapons and guns. Those would be the easiest ways to kill it.
危険
Getting seriously hurt, strong, knockback and being overwhelmed from herd (rare), running into more aggressive predators.
弱点
The mammoth is quite slow, which means that you can easily stay a few paces in front of it, and pelt it with bullets.
The マンモス is tamed violently, i.e. it must be knocked out and fed with food it likes.
気絶テイムの戦略
Kite it like anything else, they're relatively slow. Use caution when taming a Mammoth as the location in which they spawn (the snow biome) is usually littered with animals that want to kill you and the low temperatures will slowly drain your life, if unable to protect yourself against the weather, you might want to try and kite them out of the snow biome into the warmer jungle. If you have a quetzal, use it to your advantage by carrying it to somewhere safe or a pen.
Battle Mount: When bred with intention, mammoth are peers to any creature used in endgame boss runs. Like the Rex, they are a blunt instrument; success may increase by having specialized mounts for certain arenas, but the mammoth will hold worth in all of them.
Gatherer: Excellent for gathering materials like Wood. Even more so after the April 6th, 2017 patch 256.3 (PC) which gave Mammoths a 75% weight reduction to wood as a follow up to the flier nerfs of patch 256. (Damage, Weight, and Stamina)
Tank: Relatively high base health while suffering none of the size or speed issues that frequent the other large dinosaurs. (Health and Damage)
Transport: Surprisingly speedy for its size and carry capacity, can transport short distances quickly or larger distances with judicious sprinting. (Weight, Stamina, and Speed)
Damage: Tanky and with good AOE damage, the mammoth excels at dispatching numerous small foes. (Damage and Health)
Sprayer: On ARK: Survival Evolved Mobile, the Mammoth can use its trunk to absorb water. It can then spray it. This is useful to move many Creatures, to disable electrical systems, to disable held/thrown Torch, to irrigate Crops and reservoirs, to remove Leech, to remove Coloring from structures, to put out fires, or to ground Argentavis, Griffin, or Quetzal and dismount their riders. The water a Mammoth can carry is dependent on its Capacity. This stat is determined by breeding Mammoths and can be bred to a maximum of 250%.
War Mount: With introduction to TLC3, another survivor can mount at the rear end to act as a support boost for other nearby friendly/allied dino. However, they have to strike the drum in motion (a HUD above the inventory quickbar will appear) with precision to activate the buff.
Interestingly, a survivor can ride a mammoth while still being on the drum seat by directing it with commands to direct it to a certain location.
This is useful in the Genesis: Part 1 Ruffle Some Feathers mission where the drum quick time event will make creatures immune to the fear roars of the minion Yutyrannus at the end stage of the mission.
Carrying運ぶ
The following creatures can be carried by a Mammoth.
"Steincaput", which is a fictional species of the Mammuthus genus, seems to be a compound term composed of the German word Stein, meaning “stone”, and the Latin word caput, meaning “head”. “Stone head” could be a reference to the species' apparent stubbornness or a reference to their tough skulls. Besides this, "stein" might be a slight nod to the similarity between the heads of the Mammoth and Frankenstein's monster.
Mammoths require a Behemoth Gateway. They can walk through a gap three foundations wide, but two is too narrow.
Real world Mammoths had only two tusks. Mammoths in the game are, however, a different species and have four tusks in total, and the reason for that adaptation is unknown.
The number of tusks may be a reference to the Oliphants in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, with a similar ornate and spiky style.
Real Mammoths much like Elephants are social animals that live in herds, however Ark's Mammoths can be found together occasionally but are mostly seen traveling alone.
Despite the dossier stating it only fears Rex it can be intimidated by the Yutyrannus, and it can intimidate Rex as well.
Despite the dossier stating that it is difficult to tame a Mammoth, it's relatively easy actually. The only difficulty is that there are a great deal of predators in the tundra which makes trapping them incredibly helpful. Soothing Balm (Mobile) and Kibble will help greatly.
The Mammoth in ARK is larger than the real life counterpart, able to look Tyrannosaurus and Spinosaurus in the eye. It may be closer in size to the Columbian or Steppe Mammoths, both of which may have dwarfed Tyrannosaurus in size.
Real Mammoths lived in more open areas like grasslands as opposed to thick forests where moving around would have been difficult. They also did not live in snow all year round of course.
Mammoths now also gather Thatch effectively due to TLC 3. Gathering of Berries remains unchanged.
In ARK: Survival Evolved Mobile, possibly because they have side saddles, Mammoths have difficulty traveling on rafts and will slide through traps built on them. Still they can be contained when the raft moves backwards.
Interestingly, Wild Mammoths can intimidate each other.
If planning to use the Mammoth to gather Rare Mushrooms in the Swamp take note it tends to be juggled around by Sarcosuchus and Kaprosuchus among other predators thus being stunlocked due to being constantly airborne.
豆知識
The Mammoth dossier was written during the beginning of Helena's in-lore events in her Island explorer note #4 when she mentioned that she was finishing up on it until a Rex suddenly appeared and attacked the Mammoth herd she was studying.
