Runes are used on Fjordur to gain additional levels by collecting 100 runes 2 times. This will grant you additional 5 levels per collection round.

When close to one of them, a Rune icon shows up in the bottom right of the screen. As they are quite little, you can detect them from medium range thanks to the red halo that they emit.
