Basic Info

Appearance

The Gryphon is the first creature from myth that I encountered in my travels across Scorched Earth, unless you believe the rumours that the stars shooting across the night's sky are, in fact, Phoenixes. Preposterous. From the legends, I would have expected the Gryphon's bird-half to be more similar in appearance to the Argentavis atrocollum Harpagornis - but those I encountered were more owl-like in appearance, giving them an inherently cautious and stoic appearance, as well as an unnerving ability to keep their gaze fixed on you.

Encounter

While you might expect the Gryphon to be a fearsome predator, they show little interest in humans unless harassed. Much like a feline, the Gryphon spends a large portion of the day sleeping - and so can often be found resting within their nests in the mountainous regions that encircle the map. When not resting, they will often be seen hunting direwolves and sabertooth for sport - or to gather food for their gryphlets. While young gryphons can be found in the wild, they cannot be tamed.

Domestication

Taming
  • The Gryphon has a unique form of Passive tame that is more similar to Fishing than any existing taming method. In order to tame a Gryphon, you must find and mount a Wild Gryphon and complete an keypress minigame (a la Fishing) akin to a bucking bronco.
  • As the Gryphon is territorial, like the Gigantopithecus, it is recommend to approach Gryphons from behind or while they are sleeping in their nests. The option to ride is disabled while in combat, similar to feeding passive tames.
  • The length of the minigame scales with the Gryphon's level, up to 27 minutes for a level 150, and Taming Effectiveness is based on the number of mistakes. Unlike Fishing, the player can make two mistakes without failing but upon their third mistake they will trigger a buck-off event, which can vary from simply forcing the player to dismount to having the gryphon pull the player off with its maw and savaging them.
  • While the Gryphon has few natural predators on Scorched Earth, the player should still be wary of their surroundings during the minigame - lest the gryphon carry them into a hostile base or the mouth of a hungry wyvern. Dismounting a Gryphon is classified as a mistake and will incur a penalty, but the gryphon will lose interesting swiftly if the player does not retaliate.
  • Taming Affinity is preserved across rides and even if the gryphon takes damage, although both come with costs to taming effectiveness.
Usage
  • LMB.svg Melee - The Gryphon swipes at or bites the target.
  • RMB.svg Pin Down. The Gryphon pins the target down, preventing them from moving. When used on an aerial target, the target is brought down and will take damage based on the distance fell. Pin Down's fall damage is reduced compared to conventional fall damage and is mitigated by normal means, but is wholly capable of instakilling poorly armored or low level targets.
  • W Movement - Capable of moving forward. Turn using facing direction with the same turn rate as the Sabertooth (ground) and Argent (flying).
  • Passively takes 90% reduced damage from fall damage and hostile Pin Downs.
  • Passively functions as a meat-only Trough for infants of any species, regurgitating to provide food to nearby creatures.
Roles
  • Competent ground and flying mount.
  • Excellent meat gathering, but poor at gathering other resources.
  • Nursing creature - capable of feeding baby carnivores before they are old enough to eat from a trough.
