The Dugong is a peaceful aquatic mammal in the mod Oceania that wanders the arctic oceans in small groups. It uses its powerful tail to inflict a variety of harmful effects upon its target.

The Dugong, often referred to as the Sea Cow, is a medium-sized fat creature similar to a manatee. Typically found grazing in the Seagrass Field feasting on seagrass and berries. Often sought out by predators for its tasty meat and slow speed. Sea Cow will defend itself from any such attacks by headbutting opponents and slamming them with its tail.

Domesticated

The Sea Cow is a fairly useful creature for gathering large amounts of berries and seagrass using its flat grinding teeth and slurping mouth. While not great at proactive attacks, the Dugongs' tail is powerful enough to stun small creatures and scare off others. It can also take a fair beating and swim away just fine. While its slow speed makes it tedious, the Sea Cows exceptional endurance makes it a great mount for transporting resources. Other than its uses in transport, some will butcher these creatures for incredibly delicious meat, and while yes it is very good, I find it somewhat barbaric to use your very own trusting tames as your food, but to each their own. Personally, I prefer to just kill ones from the wild. Sadly hardly any is ever left for me, as most of it goes toward befriending wild creatures or making meat cakes.

Appearance

The Dugong is a large sea mammal, closely resembling a manatee with a forked tail. It has a cow spot pattern on its back. Males tend to be much more colorful.

Behavior

Dugong spawns in 2-3 groups. They can spawn on land or in water and are found mostly in arctic areas. They are passive and will fight back, and are attacked commonly by  Orkronosaurus (Mod:Oceania) and  Megalodon. They fight back with their tail swipe and simple bites. The tail swipe affects creatures differently depending on their mass. Smallest creatures are stunned for 10 seconds, Medium creatures are stunned for 5 seconds, Large creatures flee, and huge creatures are slowed.

Combat

Dugong packs are very powerful, mostly due to their tail attack, which can stun you off your mount or make unridden creatures flee. They don't have amazing turn radius, or DPS however. It is best to take out Dugong from long range, or riding a strong mount that would get force fled, as the flee doesn't stop a ridden creature.

Strategy

Long range KO weapons are advised, as is bringing plenty of narcotics to feed them with, as dugong has a rather high torpor drop. Killing its pack members, and nearby carnivores, or using a trap is recommended to keep it and yourself safe.

Utility

Defense - Dugongs tail attack is very useful for keeping attackers at bay, and allowing high dps creatures and turrets time to kill invaders, or simply scare them off. It also has fairly high heath and the ability to eat veggie cakes to help with that.

Transport - Dugongs high weight stat and decent defensive qualities make it a good transport mount.

Harvester - Dugong excels at harvesting different berries, fiber, seagrass, and more.

Controls

  • Left - This key triggers a simple headbutt.
  • Right - This key triggers a harvesting bite that harvests berries and fibers well.
  • X - This key triggers tail slap while submerged. The effect of this attack is dependent on a target's drag weight. The effects are set to four categories, Small, Medium, Large and Huge.
