2 Can be remote controlled

The Defense Unit can be remote controlled, and has powerful tanking utilities.

Appearance

They can be found with a variety of coloured armour, primarily metallic grey, blue and purple. The organic part of their bodies are similarly coloured, tending more toward greys than whites. On their armour, they have a stripe down the middle of each limb.
Defense Units will change their light color based on their aggression level (if tamed) or whether or not they are targeting a player/tame or wild dino (if wild)

  • Red: Aggressive/Targeting Player (Wild)
  • Yellow: Attacking Target/Targeting Other Wild (Wild)
  • Blue: Neutral
  • Green: Passive
  • White: Player-Controlled

Color Scheme and Regions

Behavior

Wild Defense Units will not target players or tames unless attacked first, if notified by a Scout. They also have increased targeting range and priority for  Corrupted Creatures. The Lunar type (not an X variant) of Defense Units (only wild on Genesis 1's Lunar biome) act like their vanilla counterparts and will only target survivors and tames.

Abilities

Tame only:
Right Click will bring up a shield around them, which prevents them from moving but makes them immune to damage.  Stamina drains over time while the shield is active, so it cannot be held indefinitely. Shielded defense units have a higher targeting priority from enemies, making them an ideal distraction to draw focus away from frailer tames while they tank hits. When disconnecting from a remotely controlled Defense Unit, the survivor will get a tracker buff. Hold R and select "Reconnect" to remotely reconnect to a Defense Unit. C will roll the Defense Unit into a ball form, which can move much faster and jump high, but they must transition back to walking form before using any attacks or their shield.

Combat

Combat is identical to the vanilla version. For information, see the vanilla page.

Drops

Taming

Defense Units cannot be directly tamed. Obtain tame ones by killing them and retrieving the blueprint they drop, which can then be crafted in the  City Terminal or  Tek Replicator. Their quality and cost scale with the level of the killed Defense Unit.

Utility

  • Corrupted Counter: Defense Units have a high damage and resistance boost against  Corrupted Creatures. By default this is 4x damage and 80% resistance, like the  Enforcer, but both of these values are INI configurable.
  • Taming Aid: The shield can be used to safely draw targeting, and this can be particularly useful while taming  Deathworms. The pilot of the Defense Unit can attract the attention of the worm and tank so the second survivor has time to safely set up the File:Deathworm Trap.png Deathworm Trap. It can also lure away potential future tames from starting fights they will die in from attacking strong creatures such as  Stegos while weakened, and make them easy targets for a taming partner to tranquilise while they stand still and focus on the unit.
  • Remote Control Tank: Filling a unique support role, Defense Units have the ability to tank attacks in safety, while drawing the aggression of wild creatures. Due to being remote controlled, the pilot of the Unit can remain in the safety of their base while sending support to far-off allies in dangerous locations. They can then draw enemies away from a weakened or cornered ally, giving them a chance to heal or escape.

Patch Changes

Notes/Trivia

  • The only difference in the Lunar Defense Unit is their wild AI, they will drop the blueprint for crafting the normal Unit on death
  • Defense Units have increased stats compared to vanilla ones to make up for lacking post-tame levels
