Scrub's version of Farming
Farming Overhaul

Template:Guide
While survivors can survive off of meat alone, it is quite beneficial to invest time into a farm as well. Farming allows for the creation of Kibble, which is a critical component of high level taming. Kibble isn't the only reason you should invest in a farm, however, as you also can grow your own Berries as well as Vegetables, a high quality food item that is best described as the plant equivelent of Prime Meat.
Farming can be high maintenance if done incorrectly, so in this guide, you will learn many of the core components, as well as tips to make it much easier to maintain.
The Basics
Farming in ARK is not as simple as planting the crops and waiting for them to grow. In ARK, your plants will require Water and Fertilizer in order to grow; the former can be automated while the latter requires player input. But before you can care for your plants, you must first create a Crop Plot to plant them in. There are 3 different sizes of crop plots: Small, Medium, and Large; With each crop plot growing progressively larger plants. In short, the general rule of thumb is that bigger is better. This means that bigger crop plots can produce more types of vegetation, but they also take up more space. For this guide, a Large Crop Plot will be used to show off all the types of plant life one could grow.
Crop Plots
As already stated, Crop Plot size determine the plant types it can cultivate, but what other limitations do they feature? The table below will describe the basic advantages and disadvantages
Crop Plot Size | Positives | Negatives |
---|---|---|
Small | + Cheap + Space efficent |
- Can't grow Veggies or Special plants - Inefficient in the long term |
Medium | + Middleground for price and size + Grows Veggies |
- Can't grow Special plants |
Large | + Grows Veggies and Special Plants + Lots of room for Fertilizer |
- Less space efficient - Expensive |
With that declared, it might be time to go over the benefits of each plant type. Each type has it's advantages, but there's nothing stopping you from growing it all.
Berries
Growing Berries is not only benefical for you as a food source, but it also benefits any herbivores you may have tamed. Since herbivores eat Berries, having a Berry farm is a good idea if the regular bushes are hard to reach. However, they could also be used in Custom Consumables and various Recipes. Berries are also used in Dyes and Kibbles, though the latter only applies to Merjoberries. However, not all berries are for human consumption, these are the Narcoberry and the Stimberry. That is ok however, as both of these are even more useful to grow. Narcoberries can be used in Narcotics and Stimberries can be used for Stimulant. Both can also be used in Custom Consumables. Stimberries in paticular give Stamina to the resulting food or beverage, just mind the water drain.
Vegetables
When growing Vegetables in ARK, you will quickly discover that vegetables spoil quickly after being harvested. If one does not have access to a Preserving Bin or a Refrigerator, it is best to keep the crops in the plots until you need them, that way they spoil much slower, however keep in mind that a crop plot will only hold but so many crops at once. An additional alternative method would be to store the Veggies on a creature, though this is not recommended due to the decreased spoil time compared to leaving them in a crop plot. Once a preferred method of storage is discovered, you can use Veggies for many things, like Taming herbivores, Kibble creation, Custom Consumables, an emergency food source, and nurmous Recipes.
Special plants
Special plants are unique plant types that have special abilities, hence the name. These plants are: Plant Species X, Plant Species Y , and Plant Species Z . These plants are not for consumption, but they still have their uses, however, some are much more valuable then others. Obtaining their seeds however is slightly more complicated, as they do not always spawn from the typical bushes. Plant Species X Seeds spawn throughout the swamps of The Island, The Center, Ragnarok, and Extinction. Plant Species Y Seeds spawn from the bushes with pink flowers spread throughout Scorched Earth and Ragnarok. Plant Species Z Seeds however, are only found on Aberration, and can only be obtained by standing near the strange pod-like plants that provide charge for a period of time.
- Plant Species X functions as a Turret, and uses Fertilizer as ammunition. Its projectiles slow down any targets they hit, as well as partially obscuring their vision.
- Plant Species Y are best referred to as biological Bear Traps. They also trap Humans for much longer periods of time compared to the metal counterpart.
- Plant Species Z has two benefits: It provides Charge Light, a core mechanic only present in Aberration, which wards off the Nameless. It also produces Plant Species Z Fruit, which function as Flashbangs from many first-person shooters.
Fertilizer
Fertilizer is required to keep the plants alive; it also functions as ammunition for Plant Species X. However, you may have noticed that you cannot directly craft Fertilizer. Instead, it must be composted in a Compost Bin using a combination of Feces and Thatch. Early farming is best done with Feces until Fertilizer can be produced. A table consisting of the Fertilizer values can be found below.
Fertilizer type | Fertilizer units | Fertilizes for | Fertilizes full* plant for |
---|---|---|---|
Human Feces | 1,000 | 10m | 3h 5m |
Small Animal Feces | 3,500 | 35m | 10h 48m |
Medium Animal Feces | 7,500 | 1h 15m | 23h 8m |
Large Animal Feces | 15,000 | 2h 30m | 1d 22h 15m |
Massive Animal Feces | 35,000 | 5h 50m | 4d 11h 55m |
Snow Owl Pellet | 50,000 | 8h 20m | 6d 10h 10m |
Fertilizer | 54,000 | 9h | 6d 22h 30m |
Bonemeal Fertilizer | 90,000 | 15h | 11d 13h 30m |
* When a plant has its maximum of fruits, it needs less fertilizer. As the fruits spoil after some time, leaving the plant in a non-full state for some time, these numbers are rather theoretical maximums.
Fertilizer Production
At first, it may seem hard to amass a large amount of Fertilizer, but it simpler then you think. There are a multitude of creatures that have usage on farms. To start, the Phiomia can be mass fed Stimberries to produce large amounts of Animal Feces, in Aberration, this role is take by the Roll Rat. Some creatures, like the Wyvern and Griffin, drop multiple pieces of Animal Feces when they defecate. On Extinction, one can also obtain a Snow Owl, which can cough up a Snow Owl Pellet whenever they would defecate. These pellets can be directly used as fertilizer, or as a sort of super food for the Gacha.
