ARK: The Sunken World
Unofficial expansion for ARK with a custom map and creature roster from the depth of the oceans.
(Beta public version 3.1)
Attention!! This mod is still in development and some concepts may be reworked over time.
Information on this page may be subject to change and isn't entirely set in stone. This page will be updated accordingly if anything changes.
ARK: The Sunken World (aka. TSW) is a mod pack, containing a custom map and creature roster, designed by a team who believes there could be more done for the oceans of ARK. Inspired by the trend started with Scorched Earth with biome specific maps, our team has tried our very best to offer a new experience for players in the depths of the oceans, filled with unique creatures of all shapes and sizes, a variety of new biomes to explore, new environmental challenges to overcome, and to top it off, a distinct story that does not conflict with the main lore of ARK. We hope you enjoy what we have to offer and stay with us on our journey.
Creatures
The Sunken World is planning on adding a variety of custom creatures! We intend to add a roster of 40+ custom creatures, along with our own set of map specific variants similar to the aberrant and X/R-variants, called Sunken Variants.
Below is the list of our creatures. Released and fully implemented custom creatures will display a link to their wiki page rather than their name. Released sunken variants will have a (released) next to their entry. For further information on our creatures, our discord is the best place to go (link at the bottom of the page)

Sunken Variants
The sunken variants are creatures that have become mutated by an element polluted ocean and forced to adapt to life at sea! They have 50% faster Healthy, Oxygen and Stamina regeneration, but lose Food 30% quicker due to their fast metabolisms.
Listed below are all the sunken variants that are a part of ARK: The Sunken World. However some other mod authors may be creating their own sunken creatures in collaboration with our mod. These additional variants are not listed here.

Environmental Hazards
Following the theme started by Scorched Earth, The Sunken World will have its own unique environmental challenges that survivors must learn to overcome! These range from behavioural changes to the wildlife, new diseases to avoid and catastrophic weather that can be felt across the archipelagos! Most of these mechanics are heavy works in progress, feel free to check out our discord (linked at the bottom of the page) to ask us about development, or offer your help if you're experienced in the Dev Kit!
Environmental Mechanics
Currents: Across the map, we intend to add powerful, constantly flowing currents. These will provide you a speed boost if you travel in the same direction they flow, speeding up aquatic transport. If you try to fight them though, you'll find that you won't be going anywhere any time soon.
Saltwater: Our team always found it odd that you can drink from the ocean in ARK. On The Sunken World, the oceans will be just as salty as their real life counterpart! Drinking from them will inflict the "Salty" debuff, which will rapidly drain your thirst. Any containers filled up from the sea will have a salty icon to indicate they are not safe to drink from, as well as taps connected to the ocean. Aside from rainwater and some pools of freshwater, the only ways to get freshwater will be to boil the water in a campfire/cooking pot, or rely on the unique adaptations of some of the local fauna. Purifying salty water will give you fresh water and a bit of raw salt.
Scurvy: Scurvy is a disease caused by a lack of fruits and veggies in the diet. After a certain time of not eating berries, fruits or advanced crops, your vision will start to blur and you'll lose stamina. As an unfortunate side effect, any damage taken has a 30% chance to cause bleeding due to internal weaknesses. Luckily, the disease is non-contagious, does not persist after death and can easily be cured by eating fruits or veggies! This disease will have an ini setting if you wish to turn it off, as not everyone enjoys having to micromanage annoying diseases.
Water Pressure: Survivors and creatures not native to specific depths will suffer damage from the surrounding water pressure and an increase in oxygen drain the deeper they go. Ensure you are properly equipped for the dangerous depths.
Behavioural Mechanics
Bioluminescence: Similarly to Aberration, the wildlife native to this ARK have developed unique sets of glowing patterns. This allows them to recognise both friend and foe in the darkness of deep oceans. It could also help a survivor tell if the big glowing thing running or swimming towards them wants to play fetch or wants a quick snack!
Feeding Frenzy: Blood in the water is a surefire way to attract predators! Whenever a bleeding creature enters the ocean, or a creature is inflicted with any bleed effects while in the water, all nearby sharks will enter a frenzied state where they will switch their target to the afflicted creature, and gain increased movement and attack speed! In their frenzied state, they may even attack others of their own species! This lets survivors employ the risky tactic of directing attention away from themselves by inflicting bleed with either their own tames or certain weapons. While tamed sharks are able to control their aggression, and won't mindlessly attack your pets, they'll still benefit from the buffs their wild counterparts do!
Photoreactivity: As an adaptation to a glowing world, much of the wildlife on this unique ARK responds rapidly to the prescence of any light source. While most animals will choose to flee, be warned, as some deep sea predators find an eerie glow very enticing, and will gladly eat the survivor that's attached to that flashlight! The bioluminescence patterns on an animal won't be enough to trigger these responses though, only powerful glows like that of the Anglerfish or Glow Stick will elicit a response.
Weather
Hurricane: Hurricanes are randomly occuring weather events that are felt across the map. During these freak storms, tides will rise to form high supertides, covering areas in water that usually avoid the effects of a high tide! In addition, the powerful winds will ground all flying creatures, except pterosaurs and seabirds, which have to deal with similarly hostile conditions out at sea.
Tempest: Tempests are randomly occuring weather events that are felt across the map. These powerful lightning storms seem to whip up the ocean waters below, making currents and whirlpools have stronger effects. The lightning is also incredibly dangerous, striking at metal objects or even flying creatures! Maybe not the best time to go for a soar...
Volcanic Eruption: The volcano in the centre of the tropical archipelago is far from inactive! Over the course of multiple day cycles, the volcano will go from spewing black smoke to violently erupting, charring the land around it and sending huge boulders off into the sky. The effects will be most severe on the tropical islands, but will become unnoticeable the further away you get. After the eruption the island flora will return to a lush green, and the volcano will become dormant for a large amount of time.
Whirlpool: Whirlpools are freak events that occur in specific spots across the oceans. Smaller whirlpools can also be caused by the Tidal Serpent's special attack. These are powerful swirling vortexes of fast moving water that will draw you in, slowly building up the Dizzy debuff the longer you spend within them. This will give your vision a blurred and nauseated effect, making it a little harder to tell where you're going.
Items
An ocean overhaul isn't complete without its own cast of aquatic resources and gear! Here you will find all the new items you can find while exploring the Sunken Isles. As with the creatures, only fully implemented items will have a wiki page linked.
