Handcuffs are a hands slot armor item in ARK: Survival Evolved. They are unlocked at Level 28 for 16 Engram Points.

Handcuffs are used to restrain survivors that have been knocked unconscious, preventing them from attacking or using items. They are the perfect item for keeping prisoners in check by keeping them from fighting back. However, survivors in Handcuffs can still move around like normal, meaning that one must still keep a close eye on them.

Notes

  • To attach Handcuffs to an unconscious player, place them in their "hands" armor slot.
  • While cuffed, a player cannot:
    • Open their inventory or use items
    • Damage other players or creatures
  • However, the player can still:
    • Use consumables that were in the player's hotbar before they got handcuffed
    • Open doors
    • Whistle to creatures to control them
    • Walk/run around
    • Attack without dealing damage to hasten death by starvation
    • Use HLN-A on Genesis to teleport
    • Do anything else not listed on the "cannot do" list
  • Some users can keep imprisoned players alive for longer by removing everything from their inventory and then weighing the player down with stone or non-hazardous materials. By doing this, the player cannot run or walk and so cannot drain Stamina to lose more hunger/thirst. However, if the prisoner is determined enough, they can simply wait out for starvation or dehydration. This process can be sped up by "punching" to drain stamina.
  • If a Handcuffed player is near enough to a bench they can be locked to said bench and are unable to do any actions other than look around. This can be done to offline and online players, making the transport of prisoners via raft possible.
  • If a player is force fed food and drink on regular intervals during unconscious periods, they can be kept alive for longer periods of time. It is also advisable to keep players unconscious through means of force fed narcotics when they are online, as this gives you more control over their hunger and thirst needs.
  • [Pending for Test] Handcuffs have, on rare occasions, been removed from players after server restarts. This may be due to a possible "rollback" of several minutes upon restart, when the server might not register the handcuffs having been put on a player.

Changelog

Patch  ARK: Survival Evolved Changes
236.0 Handcuffs are added to the game.
236.6 Handcuffed players can now punch (without causing damage). This allows them to drain stamina even if encumbered, hastening death by malnutrition.
273.0
  • Added the capability for another player to "Lock" handcuffed players to Seating Structures. When locked to a structure, the handcuffed player will appear to have a cable connecting them to the structure, and be forced to sit on the structure. This state persists across logging out as well. Another player can also "Unlock" you from the Structure, or remove the handcuffs. Chairs within Cages are thus very useful for transportation of prisoners.
  • When handcuffed, Poop now is forced directly into Slot 1. Prisoners can consume it rapidly as it builds up to attempt suicide.
273.11 When a player is chained to a Seating Structure, fixed removing handcuffs through Inventory to properly unseat the player.
278.0 Can no longer handcuff a player to a TEK Bed.
279.252 Players can no longer be handcuffed to toilets.
357.3 Fixed poop not going into player hotbars when handcuffed.
