Talk:Diplocaulus

Diplocaulus TLC? This is a tame that could REALLY use some improving... Honestly, I don't really know ANY players who actually WANT to use these things as they currently are at any capacity... they're just too darn CLUNKY... sure, they can be ridden in the water and provide oxygen while being ridden AND can supply oxygen with the tap of a button if they follow you... but riding a diplocaulus in areas where they'd actually be useful is a TERRIBLE idea when you could be riding a basilosaurus or a megalodon or whatever else... they have NO oceanic survivability whatsoever, and even WITH some speed, the fact that, as a terrestrial tame, they can't point their noses up or down while swimming, and are stuck facing a level position to swim like the spino SEVERELY hampers the speed at which they can go up and down, to the point that it's infuriating to use them where they'd be the most useful: the ocean. The fact that scuba tanks and flippers completely outrank this tame is just pathetic, which is a shame because of how gorgeous its colorations can be, so it just feels like a big waste. ESPECIALLY now that we have a creature like the Megachelon, which provides unlimited oxygen to anything on its back while submerged.

To that end, I have two ideas how this tame could be COMPLETELY turned around, and made into something that would be useful for end-game content, competitive gameplay, etc. Here's how you'd fix the diplocaulus: reduce its size just a little (not too much!) and make it a tame that's technically a shoulder mount like an otter, that can be equipped. Now, once equipped, the diplocaulus will hamper your speed on land just like scuba flippers would... but in the water? Shoulder-mounted speed would be equal to the boost that scuba flippers give you (unequipped off of your back the diplo's movement speed in water and on land will be determined by its actual speed stat). Finally, not only would it increase your movement speed when it's on your back in the water, but it would also function as a living scuba tank: providing whatever air percentage it does now, tied to its oxygen stat. Aside from that, other potential functions would be that it could act as a gas mask for places like the swamp cave on The Island map, and would probably help slightly with the oxygen mechanics in the lunar biome on Genesis.

I know WildCard probably won't ever see this, but I just wanted to spout off some of my ideas to salvage this currently trash-tame. Thoughts? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Saltyralty (talkcontribs) at 11:06, 17 Aug 2021 (UTC). Please sign your posts with ~~~~

Hello, we are not representing Wildcard and no know representative of them is on this wiki. I suggest you that you transmit your ideas on the official forum.

I know the wiki doesn't represent wildcard, and i've sent a contact their way with this idea, BUT what I wanted to know is what other players thought of this idea, so... decided to shoot it off on the wiki talk section for the diplo. I'm pretty meh when it comes to forums, so i don't have a forum account for the ark site, figured this would be the next best thing, and since i contribute to the wiki regularly, well I enjoy the wiki community.
