The Surface is a set of regions in the DLC Aberration.
- The Surface - Northeast (Aberration)
- The Surface - Northwest (Aberration)
- The Surface - Southwest (Aberration)
Overview
Extreme Temperatures
Because of the lack of atmosphere at the surface of Aberration, the temperature at the surface of the broken ARK varies wildly. Throughout the day, the sun raises Aberration's surface temperature to such a degree that the ground itself is aflame. These flames deal a great amount of damage to survivors, creatures, and structures alike. The damage even seems to affect your survivor while mounted. The
Hazard Suit Armor will not protect you from this.
There is little life on the surface, given the extreme temperatures. The creatures that may spawn here are as follows: (Alpha) Surface Reaper King, Nameless, Seeker, and Aberrant Fasolosuchus during the night-time.
Fortunately the temperature cools back down at night, extinguishing the flames and allowing exploration of these dangerous areas.
The flames appear at roughly 05:53 and rage all day until roughly 17:27 when you are safe to explore the area until it gets close to 05:53 again on the next day. Be rigorous in checking the time of day by holding H,
, or
and looking in the top left of your screen. If you do not make it back underground before the flames appear you are not likely to survive, regardless of how fast you are.
For efficient and successful exploration of surface biomes, it is recommended that you learn about Aberrations Seasons. You will have more time to explore during the 90% Night season. Keep in mind that seasons change at midnight so your night may end much faster or slower than it began.
Exploration Guide
The Aberration DLC strays from the standard day/night cycle by introducing a form of seasons to the game. Instead of daytime and nighttime having consistent lengths on each day, the lengths of daytime and nighttime vary over time.
Overview
There are three seasons in Aberration that combined make up one "year," or cycle through all of the seasons, that lasts 10 days. These "years" start on days that are a multiple of 10 (day 0, 10, 20, etc.).
The Seasons
Hold H in game and look at the top left of your screen to see the current day and season.

**Hours for Dawn and Dusk are estimates and show some slight variation from day to day.
How Time is Affected in Ark Survival Evolved
It is important to note that these seasons for Ark Survival Evolved do not change the in-game time of when night and day start. Day always starts at 05:30 and night always starts at 17:30. What changes is the length of the minutes between these times. This means that during the "10% Day / 90% Night" season the minutes between 05:30 and 17:30 will pass very quickly and the minutes between 17:30 and 5:30 will pass very slowly. Conversely, during the "90% Day / 10% Night" season the daytime minutes will pass slowly while the nighttime minutes pass faster. Finally during the "50% Day / 50% Night" season the minutes during the day and during the night will pass at relatively the same speed.
Caution
Survivors should use extra caution at the following times:
Day 3 Night
Day 3 is a 50% Day/50% Night day, so the first half of the night passes at normal speed. However, the date changes to Day 4 at midnight, which is a 90% Day/10% Night day, meaning the second half of night will pass swiftly and unaware survivors will be caught off-guard in the sunlight.
Day 7,8,9 Early Morning
Day 7,8,9 are 90% Night days, giving survivors extra time to explore the Surface. However, caution must be used when daybreak is imminent, as the clock time begins to pass swiftly after 5:30, and the Surface becomes scorched from 5:53, leaving only mere seconds for survivors to retreat back to the underground. It would be wise to stay closer to the entrance of the Surface when sunlight is visible.

Notes
- Despite not shown on the Resource Map, weathered rock found throughout The Surface, as well as on the way to The Surface in certain entrances, are ALL metal ore.
- For some reasons, Supply Drops found on Surface are at the similar quality to typical loot crates in caves found on other maps.
Lore
This section may contain spoilers related to the background-story of ARK: Survival Evolved.
If you want to experience the story ingame, you probably shouldn't continue reading on this section.
- In lore, according to Diana, temperatures can reach up to 236 degrees fahrenheit and still climbing. In celsius, this is around 113.333 degrees celsius. At this temperature, water easily boils into water vapor since its boiling point is 100 degrees celsius. Anything organic that is on the surface will end up being cooked to death or into a crisp.
- The factors that Diana thinks contributes to the temperature is a mix of the ARK's barrier leaking radiation onto the ARK on top of sunlight reflecting inside of the barrier. How the heat is utilized is unknown.
- The ARK's barrier seems to be akin to a cooling system for the ARK by moderating the amount of heat coming through its barrier like a dilated and constricted blood vessel.

- During events of Mei-Yin's explorer notes, Mei-yin barely managed to get underground when she was forced to discard her chestplate armor and Nerva's corpse was burnt to a crisp.
- When Diana found said items, the chestplate was highly irradiated along with a crispy corpse that was 94% Caucasian male (Gaius Marcellus Nerva).
