Wild

The first marsupial I've encountered on the Island is the Procoptodon vivencurrus. Standing nearly three meters tall, it is among the largest jumping creatures I've heard of. It is a fairly peaceful herbivore that will immediately flee when aggressed upon. One of Procoptodon's most unique features is its pouch. Unlike many pouched marsupials, Procoptodon's pouch is relatively dry and has little in the way of sticky or oily fluids. I assume this is good for the Joey, but I have not figured out exactly why yet. Its other unique feature, powerful hind legs, can knock back aggression much larger in stature. Procoptodons show great precision when leaping as if they can accurately target the landing without fail. I've seen them effortlessly hop and land from heights that would flatten other creatures.

Domesticated

It seems Procotopdon's knack for carrying things has increased its load-bearing capacity. Procoptodon's dry pouch makes it an excellent beast of burden that can carry far more than other creatures of its size. Additionally, it appears to provide an optimal environment for nourishing babies. So much that upon maturing, they have even more vigor.

Behavior

The Procoptodon is similar to the  Parasaur in behavior, and can be seen peacefully roaming around. Contrary to the Parasaur, wild Procoptodon will attack you if their level is higher than your own. The main attack Procoptodon execute is a powerful kick, that can send you and your tames soaring in the other direction.

Procoptodon are fairly rare on the island, and the areas that they inhabit are sometimes too full to hold them. To fix this, slaughter everything you can to try and get one to spawn. Be sure you know where they spawn (see spawn map above.) They enjoy congregating around the bottom of mountains, as they will eventually hop down if they spawn at the top. You can also find them on the flat zones around swamps. They also occasionally spawn on the north-east border of the island, towards the beaches.

It is important to note that unlike other herbivores, Procoptodon will not consume  Crops nor  Berries until tamed. Both adults and maturing animals will starve if left without berries. Rare Mushrooms are the best food for taming or feeding a Procoptodon.

Appearance

A giant relative of modern kangaroos, Procoptodon is not a common herbivore when compared to the herds of Parasaurolophus and  Phiomia that wander about the ARK. It could easily be mistaken for a normal kangaroo as well if it wasn't for the fact that it is bigger than a man. Closer looks show that it also has a much shorter face, reminiscent of a rabbit. This is also why it has a second name, The Short Faced Kangaroo.

Like most Kangaroo species their feet are joined at the ankle, to improve locomotion via jumping, but this species appears to have only one toe whereas most have three and an elongated middle toe.

Color Scheme and Regions

This section displays the Procoptodon's natural colors and regions. For demonstration, the regions below are colored red over an albino Procoptodon. The colored squares shown underneath each region's description are the colors that the Procoptodon will randomly spawn with to provide an overall range of its natural color scheme. Hover your cursor over a color to display its name and ID.

This information can be used to alter the Procoptodon's regions by entering cheat SetTargetDinoColor <ColorRegion> <ColorID> in the cheat console. For instance, cheat SetTargetDinoColor 0 6 would color the Procoptodon's "body" magenta.

Wild Stats Level-up

Type in values of a wild creature to see on which stats it's emphasized. Green values on a high-level creature are very good for breeding. If you have already tamed your creature you can try to recover the breeding stats with an external tool.[1]

Procoptodon

The stat-calculator does not work in the mobile-view, see here for alternatives: Apps

Note that after the creature is tamed it gets bonuses on some stats depending on the taming effectiveness. This makes it hard to retrieve the levels on a tamed creature, so this tool is only for wild ones, but gives a first impression, how well the stats are distributed.

Abilities

Active

Bite
LeftRTR2ZR
  • The Procoptodon bites the target for 20 damage.
  • Can be used every 0.67s by both a rider and the AI.

Kick
LeftRTR2ZR
  • The Procoptodon kicks the target for 20 damage.
  • This attacks has a decent knockback.
  • Can be used every 0.78s by both a rider and the AI.

Pick Up
  • The Procoptodon picks up a small or baby creature inside its pouch.
  • To drop the creature use the same button.

Jump
  • The Procoptodon jumps.
  • You can hold the button to aim the direction of the jump and reach higher and further.
  • While on a charged jump the player can press the jump button again to lose the jump momentum and fall completely vertical.

Passive

Pouch Seat

The Procoptodon can carry with an extra player besides the rider or a small or baby creature inside its pouch.

Insulation

The Procoptodon's pouch provides 169 Cold.pngHypothermic and Hot.pngHyperthermic insulation to the player inside.

Baby Care

If the Procoptodon is a female and it is  Mate Boosted, its pouch reduces the baby's  Food consumption by 50% and doubles the imprinting that the baby gets with each care.

Reduced Fall Damage

The Procoptodon receives less fall damage than most of the creatures.

Taming

For general info about domesticating a wild creature see Taming.

KO Strategy

Make sure you have a good source of stamina and speed to catch up with the Procoptodon as it flees. Immobilizing with a  Chain Bola (Not the  Bola) can also work. Creatures like the  Dilo and  Araneo can apply a slow effect if needed albeit the former cannot be ridden and is more inaccurate not to mention requiring micromanagement between Passive and Attack My Target.

Preferred Food

The Procoptodon only eats  Rare Mushrooms and  Plant Species X Seeds. Once tamed, it can also be fed with  Crops and  Berries like other Herbivores.

A Rare Mushroom is equal to 75 food points and a Plant Species X Seed is equal to 50. It eats every 100 points of hunger.

Combat

This section describes how to fight against the Procoptodon.

General

While not the strongest, the Procoptodon can cause significant damage if it chooses to attack. However, they typically run away at high speeds rather than stand and fight. Make sure you can keep a fast pace if you hope to kill/tame one! Since the TLC update its dropkick ability makes it a lot more versatile in combat as it does not do lots of damage but has a large knock back making it hard to be hit. Partner this with the new huge jump and significantly reduced fall damage to get out of most tussles.

Strategy

Large Bear trap, having someone carry you on a chase flyer, or just running it down on foot are the easiest. It can also be lured into a pen by making it aggro with Rare Flowers.

Weaponry

If you would like to tame them you should tranq them. Any method works.

Dangers

The Procoptodon would rather run than fight. Chasing one on foot can result in straying too far into dangerous territory.

Weakness

Unaggressive usually. Is very close-ranged.

Utility

Roles

  • Breeding Helper: A baby in a  Mate Boosted female Procoptodon's pouch consumes less  Food and gets a 2× imprint bonus. Performing an imprinting action (cuddling, comfort food, etc) on a baby creature held in a mate-boosted, female Procoptodon's pouch doubles the amount of affinity earned for imprinting. If the baby wants to walk, you can walk the Procoptodon around instead, note that you still need to whistle the baby creature to follow and will probably need ample safe room as not to encouter other dangerous creatures as the pouch provides no protection if you need to fight. For creatures that can be held in Procoptodon pouches during infancy, this can provide a substantial head-start on filling the imprint bar and make it less of a chore in the long run. This is especially useful for creatures that have a very tight 100% imprint timing.
  • Experience Booster:  Lystrosaurus can be carried and petted inside the Procoptodon's pouch, providing a mobile means of boosting the experience of a hunting party; something that a Lystrosaurus is most often far too slow to keep up with. (Level up Health and Speed)
  • Exploration: On no fly areas, the Procoptodon is one of the fastest and safest way to move around any terrain, it can outrun most threats and jump through most obstacles. It can easily climb mountains and use shortcuts that are not accessible to other land creatures, especially with its powerful charged jump. Additionally the Procoptodon has very high stamina, takes very minor fall damage and has a massive knockback. (Level up Health, Weight and Speed)
  • War Mount: The Procoptodon's pouch allows another tribe member to ride along. This is extremely useful if a raid goes wrong, because you have a quick escape. Its high jumping skills allow the rider and its tribe member to easily infiltrate bases and escape without having the need to destroy any walls or gates. Especially useful against stone and metal bases. (Level up Health, Stamina, Speed and Weight(Optional))
    • Fighter: Its kick attack has very powerful knockback, which makes melee opponents and small predators incapable to get close if well-managed. Disable Resource Gathering in-order to avoid accidental Encumbrance.
  • Battle/Taming Mount: Between its acceptable  Health, high  Weight capacity, good speed in both forward and reverse, knocks back nearby target, and ability for both riders to use weapons, the Procoptodon makes a great mount for pursuing and kiting creatures for taming. Just be sure to watch your back when hopping in reverse. (Level up Health, Stamina, Weight and Speed)
  • Transport: It has good  Weight for its size, and the Procoptodon can transport more than one tribe member to any new location. If you are moving other creatures as well, the player in the pouch can easily defend them, alongside with the other creature. In a pouch of a  Mate Boosted female, the player will lose less  Food. (Level up Stamina and Weight)
    • Baby/Small Creature Transport: It can carry baby and small in its pouch to transport safety from one place to another and while mate-boosted, provides reduced food consumption. Keep in mind that the pouch provides no extra protection whatsoever so don't travel with low health creatures in dangerous areas!
  • Resource Collector: The Procoptodon has the ability to harvest  Thatch and  Wood from trees,  Cactus Sap and Thatch from big cacti on maps with them, and  Berries from bushes with the bite or kick attack. With another player in the pouch collecting resources, the rider can scout the area and check for any hostile creatures and can quickly make a getaway without having to mount up at all, so this is very useful on PvP servers. (Level up Weight and Speed)

Collectibles

Better at collecting berries than one would think. Use the kick attack and gather a ton of them and escape from predators quickly with one good jump! Be cautious about becoming over-encumbered.

Carry-able Baby/Small Creatures

Pouching Procoptodon.png

The Procoptodon is capable of carrying the following baby or small creatures. They can be pouched using the radial menu or the 3rd action key (default C, Right Stick, Right Stick). If the Procotodon is mate boosted, the creature in the pouch will receive a food consumption reduction.

Once the baby hits a certain percentage of growth, it will automatically eject itself from the Procoptodon's pouch, and can not be placed back in. The following table shows creatures that can be put in the pouch.

Creatures marked as 100% are able to be in the pouch even as adults, otherwise it shows the maturation each species can stay in it.
Creatures marked as -0% need to be updated with the proper value.

Notes/Trivia

For information pertaining specifically to the real-world Procoptodon, see the relevant Wikipedia article.

  • It is important that you see the small feeding bottle icon is present when you imprint, as otherwise the 2× Imprint bonus will not apply.
  • The feeding bottle icon often disappears when you re-enter the render distance, be aware this is rather frequent, especially because of the above point.
  • When a server is re-loaded, all creatures are dropped from the pouches.
  • Procoptodons take massively reduced fall damage, because of their high jump see Fall Damage for more info.
  • The passenger in the pouch has limited view, like when a player sits on a chair, which must be accounted for when raiding bases or attacking creatures.
  • The player in the pouch gains +169 hyperthermal and hypothermal insulation which can very useful in very cold places.
  • Since boarding the pouch does not require a saddle a player can set the Procoptodon to follow another creature/tribe member and ride in the pouch as a mount
  • It has been noted that baby creatures can sometimes disappear from the pouch without a trace - there is a chance you can find them in the center of the map (at 50-50)! You can avoid this by removing the baby from the pouch when you are away doing something else, as this seems to occur mostly when the baby/Procoptodon is out of render range.
  • The dossier was revealed on October 5, 2015.[2]
  • The first marsupial in the game. It was released before the  Thylacoleo.
  • Procoptodon vivencurrus translates best to "Forward hill-toothed living chariot"; this is reference to its large frontal teeth and its usage to ferry survivors into battle. However, the specific epithet is incorrectly constructed; it should be viventicurrus.
  • In game the Procoptodon can jump backwards, however kangaroos can't do this in real life due to their hips.
  • The procoptodon was a genus of giant short-faced kangaroo living in Australia during the Pleistocene epoch. P. goliah was the largest known kangaroo which grew to nearly 3 meters tall and up to 232 kilograms (511 pounds), which is heavier than 3 adult human males.
  • The real-life procoptodons were in fact so heavy they could not hop, but rather walked like hominids.
  • In reality, only female kangaroos have a pouch. However, there are several species of marsupial where males also have pouches, such as the extinct Thylacine. The general purpose of pouches on male marsupials, in contrast to the infant-rearing purpose of female pouches, is to protect the genital area of the males from the dense underbrush they might have to cross through.
  • Procoptodon receives a major update for TLC Phase 1 at 10 February 2018 with appearance overhaul, reduced fall damage, increase in carry weight, knockback attack, carry smaller and baby creatures in pouch, jumping like  Karkinos and  Reaper King, with reduced food consumption while carried in mate-boosted Procoptodon, and doubles affinity when imprinting baby creatures inside pouch (please note: the Procoptodon carrying the baby must be female and be mate boosted by a nearby male when the baby is imprinted).
  • Real kangaroos are grazing animals eating grass, shrubs, flowers, leaves, ferns and moss, depending on the species. However Ark's Procoptodons have adapted to eating the mushrooms.
  • Real kangaroos are social animals and live together in groups or herds. Procoptodon mostly likely did the same thing as modern kangaroos. Ark's Procoptodon is found on it's own rather then found in groups.
  • As of Patch 303.1 Procoptodons cannot be restrained with  Bolas, or carried by any creatures except the  Tusoteuthis, this means it can no longer be carried by the  Quetzal.
