- Wild
I’d have thought an apex predator like T. Rex or Giganotosaurus would be the scariest thing on the ARK, until I first saw this vision from a heavy metal album cover spread its wings. Dreadmare can induce an acute threat response in literally anything. All the better to scare away other scavengers from the dead meat it’s drawn to. Those wings can focus gusts to create pressure blasts at the point of impact. Dreadmare also has an uncanny way of disrupting a target’s healing abilities while boosting its own. And there’s no outnumbering this terror, since its dreadful aura seems to drain the will to live from everything around it.
- Domesticated
You aren’t going to break this beast the usual way. The only way to gain a Dreadmare’s respect is by killing it a few times. Yes, you read that right -- you will need to respawn one to fight again and again until you prove yourself worthy. Once you’ve won its favor, your Dreadmare will reveal its greatest ability: to tuck another of your war-beasts into a pocket dimension for later access. Soon you’ll be riding into battle on a shadowy pegasus that can bring along surprise backup!

Utility
Roles
- Explorer: The Dreadmare is a fast flyer with good
Health and
Weight base stats, making it a good option for exploring the map. (Level up Stamina and Weight)
- Cargo/Farming Transport: The Dreadmare is able to capture ally creatures with its
Black Hole ability and all of the inventory of the captured creature will keep inside of it without adding the Dreadmare more weight. (Level up Stamina)
Taming
To gain the ability to interact with the Dreadmare, including taming it, you will first need to pay $4.99. This is in addition to what you paid for the base game. There is no way around this.
Then you need to find a wild dreadmare or dreadstallion, you will then need to kill the creature to get an altar to reincarnate the dreadmare. The altar acts as a placeable item and when placed, it will require tributes as sacrifices in a similar manner to rhyniognatha gestation. If not fed the correct tribute within a certain time period it will drain durability by a third of the full altar health as well as summoning both the dreadmare and the creature from said craving. If fed the correct tributes, the taming bar will rise and you will have to kill the dreadmare again. Keep repeating this until your dreadmare is tamed.
Exact steps with additional information:
- Find and kill dreadmare or dreadstallion
- Retrieve altar from corpse inventory (if killed by your character) or from tame inventory
- Place alter at night
- Alters can not be transferred between servers.
- Only one alter may be placed
- This is based on range so you could, theoretically, place more but they would be very spread out and not affective as a way to tame multiples at the same time unless you have multiple people working together
- A countdown will start
- Either:
- Place the tribute requested to summon the dreadmare /stallion
- Let the timer run out and fight both the dreadmare/stallion and the creature that would give you the tribute
- This drains durability of the altar however so it is best avoided unless absolutely necessary
- Successfully killing the dreadmare/stallion and, if needed, the tribute creature before they despawn will increase the taming effectiveness and progress if forward
- The number of times you need to fight will be determined by the level of the dreadmare/stallion
- Either:
- After killing the dreadmare/stallion the needed amount of times you will be prompted to interact with the alter
- This will both destroy the alter and summon a tamed dreadmare with appropriate levels based on taming effectiveness
Spotlight
Notes
- Wild Dreadmares will only appear at night in a similar way to
Phoenixes in heatwaves on Scorched Earth.
- This also affect its apparition on maps without a visual night like Extinction.
- Despite reappearing as another entity after being summoned and tamed by its altar, the Dreadmare will keep its trait that it had when it was wild.
- Oxygen Stat increases the Duration, but not the block count, for Terror shield, the Terror Duration applied from it as well as the duration of Aura of Hate.
