Deinotherium colossus
TimeLate Miocene
DietHerbivore
TemperamentTerritorial
- Wild
Colossus seemed like an appropriate name for such an already large elephant. The Deinotherium crush their mammoth cousins and show terrifying strength and speed. You don't want to disturb any of them. When enraged, Deinotherium instead adopts an aggressive stance which results in a charge if the enemy lingers longer than intended. In their hierarchical herds, annoyed Deinotherium will rally with mighty roars. If you want to fight with a herd, you have to be ready.
- Domesticated
Deinotheriums are not easy to tame. During the aggressive stance they adopt, the Deinotherium will show various signals to indicate if they are bluffing into their attack or just want that tasty beer they smell! Once tamed, these terrible beasts will easily obliterate structure and opposing forces while providing a powerful moral call!.
Behavior
The Deinotherium will position itself looking at you if you are nearby. To tame it, wait for the right moment (look at bottom left-hand corner). The Deinotherium will defend its territory, if you get too close, often in herds of 5 to 7.
Appearance
The Deinotherium is a kind of huge elephant with tusks under its mouth. It's also one of the only creatures with sexual dimorphism, as males have beards and longer tusks, while females have shorter tusks and are less hairy.

Combat
This section describes how to fight against the Deinotherium.
General
Deinotherium is a very powerful opponent because of its robustness, strength and surprising speed. They can become extremely dangerous if found in herds, so it's better to stay away from those.
Strategy
Best method of dealing with this collosal elephant would be separating individuals from the herd (especially males, because they deal most damage as they are pack leaders). To do this, it's best to have some sort of fast mount like Procoptodon. When the creature is separated from the herd it's usually much easier to defeat.
Weaponry
If on foot, strong firearms like Pump-Action Shotgun are the best way to deal with it, however keep in mind that Deinotherium possesses additional defense against
Auto Turrets. A much better option is using a powerful tame like the
Rex which will make a singular Deinotherium easier to defeat.
Dangers
Fightning with whole herds can be a death wish, even if using a tamed Giganotosaurus, as Deinotherium deals additional damage to carnivores, and possesses the pack leader buff and armor piercing attacks, and can heal from corpses despite being herbivores.
Weakness
Deinotherium often can't attack because of its turning radius, and becomes an easy target (they can still trample smaller tames).
Taming
Deinotherium can ONLY be tamed at player level 95 or higher.
The Deinotherium has an aggressive temperament, so to tame one it is recommended to be alone. Kill the other pack members.
Put the Beer Jar on the last slot of your hotbar and approach the Deinotherium slowly, if it is not on aggro with anything, it will starts to sniff the air, searching for the beer smell.
Once it has detected you, it will turn towards you and begin to make facial expressions while observing you.
If the Deinotherium rolls up its trunk OR sticks its ears to its head instead of showing them it CANNOT be tamed on that opportunity, to try again get away from it until it stops looking at you and repeat the approaching process.
If the Deinotherium is not doing any negative expression, it is safe to continue.
Each facial expression increases the probability that the Deinotherium accepts the beer from the player:
Head Shaking (+15%)
The Deinotherium shakes its head side to side.
Ear Flapping (+35%)
The Deinotherium flaps its ears.
Trunk Shaking (+50%)
The Deinotherium shakes its trunk side to side.
Once you reach 100% it is safe to approach, otherwise exists the risk that the Deinotherium rejects the beer and became aggresive towards the player. Regardless, when wanting to feed the Deinotherium, the player must stand under its trunk so that the creature will automatically take the beer from the player's inventory if it accepts it. Repeat this process until the Deinotherium is tamed.
Utility
Roles
- Battle Mount: Deinotherium has excellent offensive and defensive stats, which combined with its rally buffs makes it an excellent battle mount. (Level up Health and Damage)
- Combat Support: Deinotherium can also be good at supporting other tames in combat by giving them both rally buffs, increasing the damage dealt and the damage resistance.
- Boss/Titan Killer: On big female packs and a single male, the Deinotheriums can easily kill most of the Bosses and Titans, its survivavility in battle can be boosted by giving them some
Sweet Veggie Cakes.
- Orbital Supply Drop Defender: Because of its defense and damage buffs when in a herd, 4 Deinotheriums consisting of 3 females and 1 male can act as buffing units for your other creatures. Paired with
Carcharodontosauruses, the damage from one Carcharodontosaurus stacked with its
Blood Rage buff (+175%),
Mate Boost (+30%), and the male Deinotherium damage buff (+15%), 4 to 6 Carcharodontosaurus can deal extremely high damage to shred even level 500 Engraged Corrupted Rexes that have on average over 100k health in seconds.
- Harvester: Deinotherium is good at gathering
Berries from bushes and
Thatch and
Wood from trees, in combination with its good
Weight stats makes it a good general harvester. (Level up Weight and Damage)
- Transport: Deinotherium has an excellent base
Weight and a decent sprint speed, in combination with its great defense capabilities makes it a good ground transport. (Level up Stamina and Weight)

Notes
For information pertaining specifically to the real-world Deinotherium, see the relevant Wikipedia article.
- Deinotherium and its relatives are proboscideans that branched off from the elephantid lineage roughly 40 million years ago, long before features characteristic of recent proboscideans, such as large size, tusks, and a prehensile trunk or even a proboscis. They began growing in size through the Miocene epoch, evolving recurved, tusk-like incisors on the lower lip, in contrast to the derived upper incisor tusks of elephants. They also had unusually long and flexible necks, flat skulls, slenderer limbs, and a trunk that was noticeably different from that of elephants.
- The Deinotherium is the third official proboscidean to be added to ARK, after the
Phiomia and the
Mammoth.
- Deinotherium colossus roughly translates to "colossal terrible beast".
- Alongside the
Megaloceros,
Ovis and
Shadowmane, and, by technicality, the
Reaper King/
Reaper Queen and
Iceworm Male/
Iceworm Queen, the Deinotherium is one of the few dinos in ARK to exhibit sexual dimorphism, with males having "beards" while females do not, and where males and females have significant stat differences from one another.
- The Deinotherium is the largest land mammal on the ARK, outsizing the
Paraceratherium by a wide margin. Indeed, its perhaps the largest terrestrial non-sauropod found over the course of regular gameplay, being on the same scale as
Giganotosaurus and
Carcharodontosaurus.
- As of patch 63.7, the Deinotherium is the largest creature allowed in boss arenas.
- Deinotheriums share spawn locations with the
Brontosaurus on The Island and The Center, meaning they can be found in forested jungles and river banks. The only exception to this are beaches and South Haven, where Brontos spawn but not Deinotheriums, presumably to keep the peace.
