Cryolophosaurus glacialis
TimeEarly Jurassic
DietCarnivore
TemperamentExtremely Aggressive
- Wild
For its small and seemingly innocent stature, Cryolophosaurus is one of the most dangerous creatures I've encountered on the ARK. Cryo seems to possess a sort of freezing agent in a sac in its throat. By intaking water or snow in its native habitat, Cryo can create this liquid and use it to devastating effectiveness. Cryo can either spit this substance as a torpor-inducing glob, or exhale it as a freezing blast of cold air. If the latter is achieved on a target, Cryo's seem to enter an excited, frenzied state with a tremendous boost to speed, damage, and resistance. Due to the torpor-inducing nature of this "cryo liquid", Cryolophosaurus appear to be immune to the traditional methods of taming. However, Cryo seems to be incredibly vulnerable when in its freezing exhale state. Shooting them in the mouth while they're doing this causes themselves to become frozen solid and susceptible to feeding!
- Domesticated
Tamed, Cryolophosaurus are one of the most successful utility mounts that you could find on the ARK. With torpor attacks that can cause even some of the strongest creatures to succumb to sleep, Cryo makes for an excellent taming mount. Its freezing blast when tamed, appears to have a secondary ability as well. While the breath still works as you'd expect on enemies, Cryo seems to be able to apply this freezing agent to allies to their benefit. With a careful coating of this icy substance, allies will gain an incredible resistance to damage, at the cost of speed. This has the potential to make Cryo one of the most sought after support creatures on the ARK, as long as you're not afraid to get a little cold...
Behavior
The Cryolophosaurus resides in the snowy regions of The Island, and Lost Colony. The Cryolophosaurus possesses a Cryo Liquid that it creates by intaking water or snow (the amount of Cryo Liquid that a Cryolophosaurus can store is determined by its
Oxygen stat). It spits this liquid to induce
Torpidity or breathes it in order to freeze a target. Upon detecting a frozen or unconscious creature, the Cryolophosaurus will enter its Icebreaker state, receiving a boost to
Melee Damage,
Movement Speed, and resistance.
Appearance
The Cryolophosaurus is a medium-sized dinosaur in size similar to a
Parasaur. It has a crest on its head, small white feathers on its body, and a glowing cyan sac containing a liquid. When it fills its Cryo Liquid meter, its sac becomes visibly larger. Its eyes are yellow and have rectangular-shaped pupils.

Wild Stats Level-up
Type in values of a wild creature to see on which stats it's emphasized. Green values on a high-level creature are very good for breeding. If you have already tamed your creature you can try to recover the breeding stats with an external tool.[1]
The stat-calculator does not work in the mobile-view, see here for alternatives: Apps
Note that after the creature is tamed it gets bonuses on some stats depending on the taming effectiveness. This makes it hard to retrieve the levels on a tamed creature, so this tool is only for wild ones, but gives a first impression, how well the stats are distributed.
Combat
This section describes how to fight against the Cryolophosaurus.
General
Strategy
Utilizing structures or even
Bear Traps to slow a Cryolophosaurus down, one can then use ranged weapons to damage it.
Weaponry
Keeping your distance from a Cryolophosaurus is a good way to stay safe while killing one, so using ranged weaponry to stay out of ice breath range is a good strategy; however, you must remain aware of its torpor-inducing spit attack, which has a higher range.
Dangers
When a survivor is frozen by a Cryolophosaurus, they are left vulnerable to
Daeodon,
Direwolves, and other arctic threats. Additionally, the bite of the Cryolophosaurus can render one unconscious with ease. The icebreaker buff that the Cryolophosaurus gains after freezing you/knocking you unconscious also makes it hit considerably harder against fully frozen or unconscious targets, making a vulnerable situation even more vulnerable.
Weakness
The Cryolophosaurus has a lower drag weight compared to other creatures. It is relatively "squishy" in that it only has an average amount of health, meaning a serious damage tame like a well-levelled rex can make short work of wild individuals.

Taming Method
Due to the extreme aggression of a Cryolophosaurus to almost everything else, isolating it is critical for a smooth taming session. It can be carried by an Argentavis so relocating it usually isn't difficult. It doesn't need to be in a taming pen but you'll want access to something such a large rock for cover. You will also need a durable shield; a Metal Shield will work though using a Riot Shield is preferable. Having Stimulant/Stimberries at hand also isn't a bad idea if this is your first attempt at taming a Cryo.
Keep the Cryo at range while you stand next to your cover. It will then alternate between two attack cycles:
- Spits a torpor-inducing projectile 3-10 times. This can be reflected by the shield.
- Exhales an icy breath for 7-8 seconds, twice. This cannot be blocked by a shield.
While the Cryo is using its spit, stand still out from cover and hold up your shield to reflect the projectile. This should cause it to hit the Cryo, dealing ~30x the listed damage as torpor with a small amount of additional torpor over a few seconds. When it uses its breath, duck behind the cover until the breath finishes, exit cover to make the Cryo use its breath again, then take cover again. Leaving cover slightly early and briefly being hit by the breath is fine to ensure the Cryo doesn't try to reposition, lose aggro, or use other actions. Should you exit cover as the second breath finishes it'll go back to using its spit. So long as you're not late exiting from cover after each breath, this should essentially lock the Cryo in place and repeat the attack pattern until it knocks itself out. This may take over 10 minutes for a high-level Cryo but can fluctuate based on its melee damage.
If the Cryo's attack pattern gets broken due to loss of aggro or otherwise, get its attention again and keep close to your cover to get it back into the ranged attack pattern. The torpor drain of the Cryo is extremely high so even a short lapse in progression can cause a major setback. This also means you may need a considerable amount of Narcotics to keep it out while taming.

Cold Snap:
When in the Hyper state, melee attacks will apply a stack of Cold Snap, stacking a debuff that lasts 15 seconds. Stacks to 15 max, -1% damage resistance per stack/max -15%, and -2% speed per stack/max 30%. Time refreshes on add.
Cryo Liquid:
The ammo that the Cryo uses for its Torpor Spit and Freezing Breath abilities. This liquid can be obtained by standing near water or snow and drinking it, or it can be added to the current amount by holding water containers within the Cryo’s inventory (1 liquid = 1 projectile attack / 1 second of breath. The maximum amount of liquid Cryo can scale with the Oxygen stat, with the base amount at level 1 being 3 Cryo liquid).
Cryo enters a frenzied state, signified by glowing patterns along its body and heavier breathing (Gains 30% increased move speed, 15% increased damage, Melee Attack gains the Cold Snap effect. Lasts 30 seconds / 75-second cooldown).
Ice Armor:
Sleep/Frozen Affinity:
Cryo deals additional damage to targets that are frozen or sleeping. Frozen targets take 15% more damage from Cryo’s attacks, while Sleeping targets take 50% more damage from Cryo’s attacks.
Utility
Roles
Armorsmith - When tamed, the Cryolophosaurus's frost breath doubles as a protective layer for allied creatures. When frozen, the creature receives the Ice Armor buff, giving it a tremendous resistance to damage at the cost of
Movement Speed.
Taming Mount - When tamed, a group of Cryolophosaurus's can easily knock out many high torpidity creatures ( keep distance while on cooldown)
Ice Cave Mount - Cryolophosaurus excels in clearing the infamously dangerous ice cave on The Island. Not only do they have near infinite ammo thanks to easy access to snow wherever you may be, but they also don't draw aggression from buried
Purlovia. However, it is important to note that while buried, a Purlovia will not attack. If you attack an unburied Purlovia when they are near buried ones, they may spring out from the ground and knock you off the saddle. Furthermore, Cryolophosaurus are unable to use their signature freezing breath when being knocked back, so it is by no means a solo mount; bring some friends!
